Castlegar Sun — the best weekly in the west! The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, September 6, 1995 bells Wedding STRAIGHT TALK FROM Gary Maloney INCREASING GAS MILEAGE in an age where 20+ kilometres per litre on the highway has become the norm for many cars, the question arises, “Why give gas mileage a second thought?” A look at the fine print under an EPA Fuel Economy Rating says it alt These figures are estimates for omparison only. Your actual mileage may vary, depending on your driving habits and road conditions.” Talk about a bum steer! If heavy traffic is a fact of life where you live or work, you're probably falling far shy of your KPL potential right from the word “go.” Add to that an erratic, herky-jerky relationship with your gas pedal, and you may be stopping at the pump a lot more often than you had planned A few gas-saving pointers: 1) Maintain as consistent a speed as possible. Going from 20 to 35 down to 25 and back up to 35 may add variety to your drive, but it will also subtract gas mileage 2) Anticipating traffic-flow a full block in advance can save you from one of the biggest gas- wasters of all — sudden stops For example: If the light ahead is red, it's more fuel-efficient to slow down on the approach and accelerate as it turns green, than to rush up to the intersection and hit the brakes. 3) Tests show that fuel efficiency peaks in the 25 to 35 KPL range. Above and beyond 35 KPH, whatever gains you may make in time, you'll lose in economy 4) Turn off your ignition if your vehicle is at a standstill for more than a minute. It takes less fuel to re-start your engine than to idle it Steering You Straight. HELP! The hired staff - summer stu- dents - have finished work now and apart from a few volunteers, helpers down at the Island have dwindled. There are no yolunteers to keep the Chapel House open on weekends. But September and October are big tourism months here. Wouldn't you like to be one of the pleasant memories taken home by visitors to our area? A couple of hours in a time slot of your choice would help enor- mously. It's really a mini-vaca- tion, sitting in pleasant surroundings, chatting with inter- esting people Last year we had volunteers from 89 years old to 12 years old - each with unique value. For those not working, it can add a star to your resume and give you a break in your daily routine. Call Deb at the Station 365-6440. Newcomers, old-timers, stu- dents, anyone who uses the Island as their personal Eden, lonely, bored, jaded by the tur- moil of today's world - it’s your island too! The gift of volunteering can open up your life. Fall programming under way Submitted Fall programming is set to United begin at Castlegar Church. Our customers come in the door expecting to be ripped off. We must work extra hard to earn their trust. The main problem is getting them to understand the charge for diagnostics. It is essential that we identify the problem before we can repair it. Only today, a mam hung up on me when I told him the cost of the diagnostic would be $42.95. He thought it should be free. To make this understand- able, compare the diagnostic charge to the fee doctors charge to check you over and give an educated opin- ion on the state of your health. Today, all automo- biles are computer con- trolled and repair people are technicians, which requires a higher level of training and skill than the “grease monkey” of days gone by. Also, many of our customers don’t realize the complexity of the computerized machin- ery under the hood. They often tinker with it before bringing the automobile in, which almost always guaran- tees trouble. Garages, like physicians, must meet ordinary business expenses. If we offered free diagnostics, we would go under. It is true that there are some dishonest repair peo- ple, just as there are some physicians who recommend unnecessary surgery, but the vast majority of both are trustworthy. — L.K., Louisville, Ky. Dear L.K.: I agree that the vast majority of repair peo- ple are honest. If, however, the estimate for repair seems unreasonable, a person can always take the car to anoth- er garage for an estimate. It would be worth it and cost no more in the long run. *Sept.4 Happy fst Birthday JacobBatnnvilee - Loyé., Karlie: | Happy 30th Somethii Birthday Donna - Ld Tianna,’ Aaron, . & Wayne Happy Birthday Sandra Anderson - Love Mom Brought to you by Metro Quiz-Cross F F el CLUES ACROSS 1.
