McAr- thur for Re-election as President, The board of trade will hold a meeting tonight at Dominion hall to elect annual officers and receive the report of ita pre- siding officer for the past year. There are a preat many matters of interest and importance to be taken up by the board and it is hoped that a full attendance of members will be had. It is understood that abcut twenty new b will and In short, Rossland and ite mines stood alone in these matters; ite position was unique and demanded exceptional treat- ment at the hands of the government and the legislature. “*Bull’s-eye” of the Province. So far as the mining interests of the province was concerned it had become the “bull’s-eye” of the province; that we hadentered upon the initial stage of deep mining, which involved a vast of money in hinery and plant not only for mining but for the re- duction of ores, and that great as had been our contribution to the pnblic ox- chequer in the past it would not be com- pared to what we would in the years to come pay to the gi in ation increased from $200 to $500, as re- garda the grant for fire purposes. Kellie and Hume would have no interest in us and each would be fighting for his own land and district to help themselves and their friends, we would have no friends at court or in the legislature and we must place c jointed out how essential it was that there should be a trunk from Rossland to Ci lecity. If that district was to form part of our division, reasonably good transportation facilities must be had between them and us, It would not do to compel them and us to cross and recrogs the international boun- dary line in order that we might be able to do business with each other. Brlef and Camprehensive Statement of His Interviews with the Government. To this state- He Filed Statements, At the request of the premier I filed Before ending this part of my report I desire to add that this district is under deep and lasting obligations to Mr. John Provincial Legislation. Victoria, March 18—The mining re- port for 1897 presented in the legislature shows the output vf all minerals as $10,455,268, as compared with $7,507,046 in 1896, on increase of 40 per cent. The lode mines show $7,500,000, an increase of 65 per cent. Carlyle, provincial min- eralogist, predicts a big increase for 1898. The principal yields were: Placer gold, $518,000; lode gold, $2,122,000; silver, $3,272,000; copper, $376,000; lead, $1,890,000; coal, $2,648,000, Principal district outputs: Cariboo, Kirkup, the government agent here, who has from the beginning been a good friend to it. By official reports and in interviews with the ministere when here and in Victoria he has urged the needs of Ross- land and its mines in ne uncertain terms for the past three years. As late as last fall when the premier and the minister of mines were here he supplemented the demands of this board and from his offi- cial position endorsed them. $325,000; West Kootenay, $765,703; Slo- can’s contribuciong, $3,280,900, and Trail creek, $2,297,000. Carlyle advocates that a‘ certain am- ount of work should be demanded with- in 90 days of locatinga claim, so as to do away with the evasion of the law by allowing a location to run out and then getting some one elwe to relocate and deed the claim back. The repoit is thorough and deals with each district in detail, describing the principal mines, and is copiously illustrated with photo- In this connection also desire to com- gruphs.
