AS I SEE IT AS I SEE IT' WITH WITH HARRY PEPPER HARRY PEPPER PLAY-FOR-FUN CABARET HOPES TO ATTRACT The past season in the PlayFor-Fun League may not have been the most successful from a playing viewpoint as the league was beset by first one thing and then another -- bad weather this past Spring followed by the first Cominco vacation shutdown which saw many games postponed, because of some lack of enthusiasm helped along by the var• ious 'setbacks it was difficult for some clubs to field a team. However, despite the troubles along the way, the proposed schedule finished to the satisfaction of most and an interesting playoff was set up and when all the results were in the Hanson's Texaco crew went undefeated through the roundrobin and wound up as League Champions . The comparatively young squad got some good hitting, excellent fielding and fine pitching from all members of the club to insure the victory . Pitching chores were handled towards the end of the season almost exclusively by Renato " Rags " Magnone and he did a pretty thorougJl job for the green-clad Texans who are sponsored by garageman Gordie Hanson. The executive, however, hope that their latest effort will not meet with too many setbacks: If the upcoming .cabaret which is planned for November 26th comes up to the standard set by last year's bash it will be a dandy. Refreshments will be served :J . at 6 p.m. and supper will be at 7 and dancing to the " Country Squires" will start at 9 and continue until around 2 a.m. Tickets will be available to members at $6 .00 a couple and can be had from all team representatives . A new wrinkle this year will see any tickets not picked up by members by November 1st will go on sale to the public after that date . Let's hope there won't be too many in the latter category, because it would not be a good omen for an organization which up to now bas been real fun to belong to, and I for one am sure hoping it stays that way. Turning to hockey for a moment, the news bas come to me that Joey Zanussi is having a good camp with the Detroit N.H. L. club and has been moved to a wing spot from his former defence spot. This must be attractive to Joe as he gets a bonus for every goal scored. So he could add considerably to bis pay cheque tfy being moved up forward. He expects to be sent back .to Fort Worth for a time but hopes this will be the year he makes it back up to the big time . I shall pass along any further news I get on Joey , so watch for it . -- Last Sunday was all-star day in soccer at Butler Park and one of the proposed games was not played because of what I consider to be a sour grapes attitude taken by one of the outside teams . In all likelihood, bad John Hughes been fit he would have been given the job of coaching the outside all-star Juveniles against the Trail Juvenile stars but in bis absence I was handed the job and I expect that I shall be told that I made a poor showing of it, and it will be the truth, too. But the main contribution to the failure was the refusal of the Castlegar Juveniles to send in 5 representatives as I had requested, when the Rossland players were contacted in regard to making up the extra players they refused , and from my point of view, rightly so. Their attitude was, if Castlegar didn't care enough about being selected for the all-star, why should they be pushed into it to fill in. Which brings me to the point I am trying to make . I would like to go on record as never having been in favor of the all-star day as it has been defined by the local soccer association. Why pick an all-star team by the present format? Any allstar team should be picked by positions , regardless of what team the candidate is on. In this way the boy selected for a certain position would feel honored. It is not the same when the selectees are picked at random by their coach and are then turned over to the all-star coach to be used as and when ~e chooses . I would like to see selection committees formed, composed of all coaches, one for the Trail teams , another for the outside teams. Their selections would be made and boys named well ahead of all-star day . This way a boy would know where he would fit in , either on the starting line-up, or as an alternate . In making this suggestion I know that I shall get lots of arguments , but, what the heck, what's wrong with a good argument . It might turn up something of value that has been lying dormant. A group of athletically oriented young men who are looking for some winter entertainment are providing their own by hiring the high school facilities at a cost of $15 .00 apiece, and an instructor to go with it. Pete Bourchier is the instructor and among the guys energetic enough to attend are Barry Seal, Joe Rosse, Ivan "The Terrible " Bell, Charlie Schwartzenhauer, "Rags" MagCederholm, Rich Miller, Jimmy Ling, John and Bruce Holm and Jimmy Portz . There may be others but at the moment of writing the names escape me . They get a chance to play a variety of indoor sports and I imagine this may mushroom into something like the playfor-fun program since a lot of the guys in one are in the other. That they 'll have fun is not a question, and it could be that some benefits will come from it.
