JOHN CHARTERS’ Reflections &. Recollections It’s Monday afternoon and overcast. It's my Getting- | ka mm a. Over-Sunday Day and, even though the teachers’ strike is still on and the children are still off, it’s been a Good Day. Yesterday, because we had 10 extra for the noon meal (par for the course), thirty of us sat down to our weekly dinner and the chapel was almost filled for the Sunday service here. Early in the morning Jorge from in new outfit of clothes, and he, too, is responding well to the love he craves. It was fun tucking them into clean sheets that first ‘night. 5 By I now have 18 sons and four daughters. It seems that Marco Antonio was aban- doned by his parents three years ago and since then has been sleeping in Quito’s streets. For a week he'd stayed with a family in San Antonio as he'd befriended one of the smaller sons who'd sneaked him into the house. But his stay there proved to be very temporary. So I filled my tub with hot water and watched it change color as Marco Antonio became lighter. I shampooed his hair, outfitted him with clean clothes, and Jorge gave him a haircut which will facilitate the destruction of his lice, He's a chubby little boy, responds to affection — of which he has known little — and is intelligent, and artistic. Later, the owner of the stationery store in the other neighboring town of Pomasqui drove in with an even smaller boy in the back of his truck. Gonzalo looks to be about seven or eight years old. So his associate, Dr. Suarez, took them ‘out on Tuesday: He home on the coast and phoned a few days earlier to ask me to ) Spare inion Gonzalo was not wanted by either parent. Finally his stepmother took it upon herself to solve the problem by putting him ona bus with a one-way ticket to the most distant stop. There my friend's workmen found him and, taking pity on him, brought him into Pomasqui where he helped in a construction project for a week by lugging bricks. 3 Gonzalo had long hair, an infected lip and somewhat wild eyes like a frightened animal. I had no choice but to add him to the family. He, too, had a hot bath, shampoo, haircut and aged my eye and I returned the next day for another checkup. When he removed the bandage I could see. - How I-wish it were possible to share.the good news with Dr. Moreno that his surgery, plus the;implant surgery in yen without correc- and to drive, without natural filters, I do have to wear dark the bright sun, and Til probably be fitted with contact lenses.or glasses to bring my vision to 20-20. Research shows that entire families can often suffer from insomnia, dep- ression, resentfulness and anxiety when forced to move. | One Vancouver woman was so upset about her hus- band’s plans to move to suburban Surrey that she took him to court, said Robert Darielsen, manager of the East Vancouver branch of A.E. LePage Real ‘Estate Services Ltd. The judge prevented the sale of the home until the couple could come to a compromose. “The woman just put her foot down,” said - Danielsen. ‘The couple moved to a home with a larger lot — eight houses down the block. Jennifer ‘Campbell, a re- search psychologist at the University of -B.C., said a move is most traumatic when a family doesn't acknowledge the intense stress cause by moving. TOOK A YEAR Campbell, who moved from Athens, Ga., was separated from her family for nearly a year until her husband, a ‘plumber or’ ‘going to" the dentist, take more time and effort for someone who is un- familiar with the city. “Everything you do is more stressful the first year,” said Campbell. ~ Although moving is stressful for all age groups, studies show young children, adolescents and the elderly find it most difficult. How well children adjust depends on the amount of. control they feel they have over the move, said Camp- bell. Children should, at the very least, be allowed to help choose the new house, or to pick the bedroom they pre- fer. “May daughtor insisted on plastering a whole wall with horse pictures,” Campbell said. “I think it looks terrible, but’ it was somehow very important to her.” Often parents become pre- occupied with getting settled and don’t pay enough atten- tion to their children’s need to explore the new city in the firat months after the move, she said. : 4 Moving is also distressing to the elderly.
