Toyota” Canada. vice-presi- dent -Hector Dupuis said Tuesday. “Oh, what | a feeling; we're very happy,” Dupuis said in a telephone interview.- But details of the plant, announced by- the Japanese parent company this morning were still scarce. Dupuis said it will take until the fall to decide where the plant will be located and how many jobs will be created. Toyota said in an early- morning statement from Tokyo that it will begin pro- ducing passenger cars by 1988 in new plants to be built in Canada and the United States. About 200,000 cars a year will be built at a U.S. plant in a location also yet to be decided. \_ Dupuis said the Canadian Plant will produce compact cars with 1.6-litfe enginés in cars. ~~ Auto industry Fanti had been anticipating an ann- ouncement from Toyota on an assembly plant in Canada. Honda Motor Co. is proceed- ing ‘with construction of a vehicle -assembly _plant._at: Alliston, Ont., north of Tor- onto, and analysts had spec- ulated that Toyota would follow suit. The Alliston plant will produce 40,000 units a year after 1987. Toyota, the leading seller of imported vehicles = in Canada, when car and truck totals are combined, now operates a small aluminum wheel-manufacturing plant in British-Columbia. Until the mid-1970s, it operated a small assembly plant in. Nova Scotia; but pulled out be- cause the operation was con- sidered uneconomic. Investors worried LONDON (Reuter) — For- eigners are worried about their investments in. South Africa following the declara- tion of a state of emergency there, but there are no signs of panic, stock market ex- perts said Tuesday. The stocks of companies involved in South Africa — such as banks, gold mines and mining investment houses — fell sharply on the London and johannesburg stock exchange Monday. But analysts said this re- flected a to put price, and the country’s currency, the rand, firmed to 53 cents U.S. from 52.25 at Monday night's close in fresh funds into South Africa while political tensions per- sisted, not a mass withdrawal of investments. —* South African gold mining - shares rallied Tuesday, aided by a slightly higher bullion Gulf Canada ‘deal went sour OTTAWA (CP) — Prime Minister Brian Mulroney scuttled the deal to sell for- cign-owned Gulf Canada to /Toronto’s Reichmann family, a leading figure in the Toron- to “said Zukerman, said a number of other factors may have made the deal unworkable, ‘‘but it was the one key thing that went sour.’ Petro- Canada had been Tuesday. Old Coca-Cola coming back TORONTO (CP) — Old Coca-Cola is coming back to Canada, and its parent hopes it will live happily ever after with its controversial new relative Coke. A poll conducted by Tor- onto-based Coca-Cola Ltd. showed enough consumers still want the old-soft-drink brand, although most Coke fans have been turning to the new formula, company pre- sident Neville Kirchmann said Tuesday. “The consumer has spoken and the direction is clear,” Kirchmann said. “We will offer the classic (old taste) of Coca-Cola in addition to the new taste.of Coke in Can- ada.” The move is in‘line with similar steps taken this Rent. this space! Brokers in Hong Kong said they, had no evidence that South African funds” were being shifted into invest- ments in the British colony. “If that is true, it is only a trickle,” said a broker witha major European securities firm. Other brokers said U.S. investment fund managers had been moving funds .over- seas from South Africa and that so far AuStralia had been the main beneficiary. In South Africa, central bank Governor Gerhard de Kock said financial markets had been little influenced by the state of emergency. “So far, from our point of view, very little has happ- ened,” he said.
