c Castlégar News April 15, 1987 Taylor's own scent NEW YORK (REUTER) — For $165 US an ounce, plus tax, you can smell like Eliza- beth Taylor. After 45 years in show business, the screen star has gone into business-business, touting a new perfume called Elizabeth Taylor’s Passion. “It's my first business ven- ture, says the 55-year-old actress who has become the latest celebrity to have a ultra-expensive fragrance marketed in her honor, cap- italizing on her name and image. Among the other stars who compete at cosmetic counters are Catherine Deneuve, Sophia Loren and Linda Evans. In Taylor's case, the per- fume is geared to a woman who is comfortably over 30 and old enough to be inspired by the lady who played Cleo- patra ani ed off with Mark Anthony (Richard Bur- ton), while the cameras were still rolling. Taylor, who says her act- ing career has not been on the front burner for eight years, will soon be starring in department stores — hawk- ing the perfume, a dusting powder, a spray, an eau de cologne and even a bottle of scent clothed’ in a mink Taylor admits she has never played a department store before. An eight-city tour is, plan- ned for her, plug a $10 million US advertising As befits a movie queen, Taylor, legendary for telling time badly, arrived 55 min‘ utes late after reporters were told to arrive two hours early. She was asked a total of two questions, including one which ended with the qués- tioner blowing her a kiss, Taylor then ies. of with the slogan, “Be touched by the fragrance that touches the woman.” MEN NEXT If all goes well, Taylor may have a new product, Eliza- beth Taylor's Passion for Men, which is a perfume pusher’s way of describing aftershave and not a refer- ence to her seven marriages. Taylor unveiled her new floral fragrance, its lavender package and art deco bottle at a recent New York news conference that was pure Hollywood hokum. The gossip columnists in the audience said the event reeked a bit of jungle gar- denia, the scent they said she used to prefer above all others. views. Chit-chat was confined to Taylor's perfume and no one brought up the subject of current flame George Hamil- ton. The perfume will go on sale in August in what its makers call “700 doors” or outlets. For her television adver- tisements, Taylor wears $6 million worth of jewels from Harry Winston. : She was much less showy at her news conference, wearing only the $650,000 di- amond brooch she bought from the Duchess of Wind- sor’s collection auctioned off earlier this month. “It is the first important piece I ever bought for my- self,” she said. Vacation scams are con man’s paradise WASHINGTON (AP) Con artists who have been’ hounded out of the phoney coin and fraudulent oil lease arenas are finding easy pick ings in vacation scams, gov- ernment and travel industry officials say. “In the last six months to a year, it's really been prolifer- ating,” Vincent Amberly, a staff lawyer with the Federal Trade Commission, told a conference of the American Society of Travel Agents. “We've been closing down some of the . . . (other) scams and the travel industry seems to be where they're going.” Amberly said that al- though up-to-date statistics on vacation fraud are difficult to come by, “It’s certainly in the hundreds of millions of dollars and may very well be € of dollars.” The trend troubles legiti- mate travel agents who say the fly-by-night operators are giving their industry a bad name. “Too many times the oper- ator of a scam is charac- terized as another travel agent.” said Francis Goranin, president of the society, which lists 23,000 member agents. Amberly said that a typical scam operates four months to six months, collects several million dollars and then dis- appears. The false promises usually are made over the telephone and not in writing, he said. “It’s very hard to detect, and it's also very easy . . . to take the money and run, so to speak.” Genuine cut-fate fares of- fered in recent years by air- lines are making many too- ON ALL REMAINING ‘86 HYUNDAI PONYS (Except Pony L) While They Last! good-to-be-true travel deals look more plausible, said Su- san Tanzman-Kaplan, presi- dent of the society’s southern California chapter. “When you look at fares that are legitimately low, when someone comes up with a scam, it doesn’t look so far out of the ballpark,” she said. She noted these warning signs of fraudulent vacation packages: an unreasonably low price, a request for a credit card number over the phone, pressure to make an immediate decision, unwill- ingness of the solicitor to give an address or telephone number and vagueness about which airline or hotel is part of the deal. “The key is can people see something in writing before they make a commitment,” Amberly said. “That's the biggest tipoff.” Trade In Allowance * That's right.
