Science Council calls for entries This may come as a shock, but some people think science is boring. Their image is of strange people wearing white lab coats, conducting vague ex- periments. To them science holds no appeal. They fail to see its impor- tance in understanding the world around us and the role it plays in ensuring we enjoy a high quality of life. These people have obvious- ly not met Sid Katz, Executive Director of Science World, and this year’s winner of the Sci- ence Council of British Co- lumbia’s Eve Savory Award for Science Communication. Katz is both a practising scientist and a communicator of science — not a common combination. He is a professor of phar- maceutical sciences, supervis- ing graduate students and managing an active research program. He maintains this job in addition to his role at Science World. Katz has been author and host of many radio, television, video and print stories on sci- ence education, health and medicine. He knows how to ex- plain science in a way that makes you want to learn. His accomplishments in communicating science in- clude hundreds of CBC contri- butions, both locally, regional- ly and nationally, two years as science and health reporter for both BCTV and CTV National News and the development of numerous motivating work- shops for science teachers. With an enthusiasm that would infect even the strictest of non-science fans, Katz’s de- finition of science is under- standing what nature is all about. “The idea is to try to explain certain things which bring principles together,” he states, “to allow people to see a little better, so that they’re encour- aged to make choices in their lives which are based on a lit- tle bit of information.” Commenting on the effects of Katz’s leadership of Science World, nominator David Vogt, Director of Science Communi- cations at UBC, remarks: VOTE FOR .. - a Council that - earns the respect of those it serves - is accessible and accountable - provides all the information - all the time Within days of his assum- ing the role of Executive Di- rector (in June 1991) it was possible to feel his presence in the entire facility: a tangible electricity; an upbeat, ener- getic and creative feeling. Ex- citing new projects, all with Katz’s personal attention, are underway. Katz will be honored for his achievements in science com- munication at the thirteenth annual B.C. Science and Engi- neering Awards Dinner in Vancouver on Oct. 20th. Premier Mike Harcourt is the special guest speaker. The B.C. Science and Engi- neering Awards were estab- lished in 1980 by the Science Council of British Columbia to ensure that men and women from B.C. whose achieve- ments are making a signifi- cant contribution to scientific knowledge receive recognition for it. Eve Savory, in whose honor the Science Communication Award is named, is a science specialist with CBC National news. She is originally from Duncan. Suggestions for future win- ners should be sent to: Communications Science Council of B.C. Suite 800, 4710 Kingsway Burnaby, B.C. V5H 4M2 The deadline is March 31.
