He was a teen-age door-to-door book salesman named David’ business and thus a’collectible was born. Although he operated in upstate New York, McConnell called the company he formed in 1886 the California Perfume Co. (named in honor of a California friend who invested in it), and was one of the first to employ female salespeo- le, F The premiere Avon Lady was a New Hampshire widow named Mrs, Albee, who began by selling the firm’s popular Little Dot Per- fume Set, and went on to recruit and train cther door-to-door sales- women. The early bottles issued by the firm, which were marked “C.P.C.” and made — in limited quantities — in various forms, are today highly collectible. And although an Avon line was introduced in the mid-'20s, it was 1939 before the name of the company was changed to Avon Products Inc. Over the years, such an enor- mous variety of figural ceramic, glass and plastic bottles were is- sued by the company that most collectors tend to limit their inter- est to one subject or one specific type of product ‘(cologne, after- shave, etc.). Collector interest began to bur- geon in the mid-1960s when Avon brought out a men’s cologne in an amber boot’and an after-shave lo- tion,in a: stein ‘decanter. In addi-.. tion to the bottles, there.is a mar- ket for the jewelry, banks and other children’s items, plates, soap and other products of the compa- ny, as well as awards issued to Avon representatives (of whom there were more than a million by 1979) and managers. What kinds of prices do these inexpensively produced objects bring on the secondary market today? Here are some representa- tive figures from 1991 price guides: ° Volkswagen lotion, box — $10. ©Toilet water, Apple Blossom, 1941, box — $12.
