ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD, JUNE 29 1900 GALLANT RESCUE Dr. Hoyes.Leaped Into. Raging Colum- bia and Saved a Child. FROM TEN-MILE CURRENT All Trail is Talking About the Brave Act of the Doctor—Dashed Against the Bridge, He Held the Child Until a Boat Came to His Help. Dr. W.. T. Hoyes of Trail is re- ceiving congratulations from every quarter on his heroism in saving the life of the child of Mr. and Mrs, Walter Carr. The doctor jumped from the bridge into the Columbia river, which at the pres-. ent is at its highest andis rushing, by at.the rate of 10 miles an hour, with dangerous eddies and under- currents. The attention of Dr. Hoyes was attracted by the shrieks of a frantic mother and, grasping the situation, he ran and jumped without even removine his clothing. When he reached the surface the. current had carried the child about 70 feet away and it was disappearing for -the last time when the doctor, guided by the directions. of “those on the bridge, swam -and dove, ‘bringing the child to the surface, it aloft with one hand and with the other swam towards the scaffolding of one of the -buildings along the bridge. Here the current was so strong that it dashed him with ter- rific force against the stringers, bruising him dreadfully. L. M. Johnson in the meantime had climbed down to take the child from the doctor’s hand, and Al Ingle came to the rescue with a boat. After several minutes of hard work the child was” resuscita- ted and many were the congratula- tions the doctor received, for at the present time it takes a man of more than ordinary strength and a swim- mer better than the average to withstand the current of the Co- lumbia. es TODAY'S STOOK SALES.
