CASTLEGAR ¢ all PAPA JOHN TELLS ALL NEW YORK (REUTER) — John Phillips, founder, creator and lead singer of The Mamas and the Papas, says his road to a living hell was lined with one celebrity after another. Mick Jagger dragged him to a Wimbledon tennis match the day after he seduced Jagger's wife Bianca. Warren Beatty shared women with him and he tells of an orgy with Jane Fonda that “was so innocent.” Rolling Stone Keith Richard shared drugs with him, giving him a mountain of heroin and encouraging him to shoot up. Millions of Americans sang Papa John's songs: California Dreamin’ and Monday, Monday among others. And millions bought his records to make him rich enough = to become a non-stop junkie. His addiction ended only when the government = arrested him for drug-dealing in 1978 and, as part of a plea bargain, put him into a drug rehabilitation program. Phillips has written a tell-all autobiography, Papa John, that makes other accounts of drug addiction seem carefree or at least celebrity-free in comparison. GIVES DRUGS The father of five children, Phillips admits to giving his oldest children drugs before they had even reached the legal drinking age. KEITH RICHARDS shared mountain of heroin He says he used to drive daily to New York City from his Connecticut mansion in his white Cadillac with a Gucci bag stuffed with drugs and syringes. There a couple of willing pharmacists provided him with thousands of pills that he traded for the high-grade heroin that he and his third wife, the South African-born actress Genevieve Waite, were addicted to. Phillips says that he and his wife were doing $1,000 a day worth of drugs when he was busted by Drug Enforcement Agency agents. With $150,000 a .year coming in on royalties from songs that helped define the “hippie” era of the 1960s, Phillips said he could almost afford his habit. “I guess I am an example proving that the system works. I was given a short jail term and placed on probation for eight years provided I went to a drug rehabilitation centre.” Phillips is estranged from his wife Genevieve and the two are discussing a divorce. He lives now in upstate New York and has started The Mamas and the Papas again with his daughter MacKenzie as a lead singer and with singer Spanky Mac Farland SMOOTH MOVES . . . You can find him in the theatres now with Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters. Coming up is Water, a far-out comedy from George Harrison's Hand-Made Films. He has finished guest shots in Sweet Liberty and Half Moon Street, plus a full-length role in The Whistle Blower. Next he will film a Frederic Forsythe thriller, The Fourth Protocol, followed by Surrender, a Los Angeles comedy directed by Jerry Belson. “Coming here was one of the best decisions I ever made,” said Caine, who made the move not merely to escape Britain's crushing taxes but also because he wanted to establish himself as a versatile leading man. “Like most British people, I speak too quickly,” he said in an interview. “So when I came here, I coached myself to SHRINE CIRCUS al NEW YORK (AP) — Ac tress Brooke Shields has becn signed to a three-year, multimilllion-dollar contract to appear in ads for Arrid Extra Dry antiperspirant, the company says. ls Coming to Town!
