West Kootenay playoffs this weekend.

country skiers won medals at
the B.C. Winter Games held
in Fernie over the weekend.

Pauline Orr won a third
place bronze medal in the Ju-
nior Girls 7.5 kilometre race.
Castlegar’s Claire Andrews
and Carrie Lynn Brown
teamed with Rob Cameron of
Kithberley and Karen Rasku
of Rossland to take the
bronze medal for the Junior

Men and Women's mixed re-
lay event.

Cameron took a silver
medal in the Junior Men's
individual 10 kilometre and
Rasku collected a bronze in
the Junior Women's 7.5 kil-
ometre race. !

Fernie’s Kirston Majic
took a silver medal in the
Junior Girls 7.5 kilometre to
give the Kootenay Zone team
a total of five medals.

Coach Gord Gibson of
Castlegar was elated at the
results.

“We had one of the small-
est teams there with only 12
skiets and we were third in

total medals won, second if
we relate that to the size of
teams,” said Gibson.

The overall winner was
Zone Eight with 23 skiers
from 100 Mile House, Wil-
liams Lake, Quesnel and
Prince George. They collec-
ted 11 medals. Second place,
in total medals went to the
Okangan Zone with 15 skiers
who collected six medals.

The Kinnaird Junior Secondary school boys basket-
ball team captured the West Kootenay Grade 8 boys

“It (the decision to quit) was made for me,” said
Brooker, who entered the room on crutches, his left leg in a
cast. “That’s why I'm not shedding too many tears right
now.

“This way, there really is no choice. I can't compete 100
per cent on the World Cup circuit and if you can’t compete
100 per cent, you shouldn't be there.

“I reached a point where I wasn't able to compete and
do well. There was just too much of a chance of wrecking the
knee and not being able to walk. This is where I draw the

ped up their basketball sea-
son Friday night against
Nelson. In a dramatic game,
Nelson defeated the Rockers
60-50 in the first round of
West Kootenay champion-
ship play.

Trail was the overall win-
ner and will be moving on to
the provincials.

Castlegar team members
Eric Dillon and Scott Bole
were named to the West
Kootenay Championship All-
Star Team.

The Senior Rockettes are
currently competing at the
provincials in Penticton and
are expected to do well.
