But, as is so often the case, the process didn't work. Breton had tried everything short of adopting. She says she and her husband, Pierre Giguere, a 32-year-old computer software salesman, “just really wanted to have our own ? ‘Then she heard about the Mi VB being cutting edge of in-vitro methods. Among the new methods are the use of ultrasound to locate the egg, thereby eliminating the need in most cases for a surgical procedure known as a laparoscopy.” “ * Fertility, which was set up by Dr. Vito Cardone in mid- in a small, medical building in the city’s north end. Breton went there and by Dec. 4, she was pregnant, an event she describes as “extraordinary.” Cardone, a gynecologist trained at some of the world's leading in-vitro clinics, thinks Breton’s pregnancy is anything but a fluke. ‘HARD WORK’ “It’s not beginner's luck — it’s hard work,” Cardone said in an interview. “You're not playing poker. It's science, and we're using scientifically yn methods.” He was quick to point out that he did in less than one that are not commonly used in North America. New ‘in-vivo’ technique used MONTREAL (CP) — Doe- tors at Maisonneuve-Rose- mont Hospital say. they have made ful use of a new month what other in-vitro clinics at have been trying to do for years. A clinic at the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital has not had a successful in-vitro pregnancy in 2‘ years, Cardone said. The same goes for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital clinie which has been open for 3'2 years, while the St. Luc Hospital clinic has had one pregnancy in more than 70 tries during the past year, he said. While Breton became pregnant, eight other women who were part of Cardone's first group at the centre failed to do so. Cardone is hoping that he can get his success rate up to 26 or 30 per cent, which would match that of the best in-vitro centres in the world. Canada’s most successful centre is at the University of Western Ontario's hospital in London. With a success rate of about 16 per cent, it currently has a six-year waiting period. Cardone said he decided to set up what he claims is the only private in-vitro clinic in Canada after four local hospitals turned down his request for facilities. He declined to name the hospitals, but said they rejected the idea mainly because of a lack of funds. They say a 31-year-old Montreal woman became the first Quebecer to become pregnant by the new tech- nique, known as in-vivo ferti- lization. It is similar to the in-vitro process — commonly known as the test-tube baby procedure — pioneered in Britain in 1978. The in-vivo method is ex- pected to produce pregnan- cies 30 per cent of the time, compared with a 15 to 20-per-cent success rate for the in-vitro method. “Another advantage is the fact that fertilization occurs inside the womb,” said Dr. Pierre Miron, in charge of the implanted in her body after 48 hours. But doctors say the new in-vivo method has a major drawback — it cannot be used on women with blocked Fallopian tubes, or about 40 per cent of all female in- fertility cases. Doctors refused to identify the first successful recipient of the new technique, but said she is in the ninth week of a pregnancy that appears to be progressing, normally. Genetic sex tests misued NEW YORK (AP) — Some pregnant women in the United States are using gen- etic tests to discover the sex of their fetuses and having abortions if -it is not the gender they want, experts have said. The practice is rare and experts on the tests said they discourage it as unethical or a misuse of the tests which are intended to uncover serious genetic defects. In one case, a 36-year-old mother of two boys had an abortion when she found out her fetus was male, said Marie Barr, co-oirdinator of the prenatal diagnosis clinic at Thomas Jefferson Univer- sity in Philadelphia. The tests are generally performed if a woman has a family history of genetic dis- ease or is 35 or older, because older mothers have more risk of bearing children with genetic defects. The standard test, called amniocentesis, is performed when the fetus is about 16 weeks old. A newer test not in wide use, called chorionic- villus sampling or CVS, can be performed as early as nine weeks, allowing for earlier abortions. Of 2,500 women who have gone through CVS proce- dures at Thomas Jefferson University in about three years, perhaps 10 have had abortions because of the sex of the fetus, said Laird Jack- son. In two years at the Baylor College of Medicine, four of about 320 CVS cases turned out to be for sex-selection, said Karen Copeland, genetic counsellor. Of 2,000 to 3,000 amniocentesis cases in the last three years, two or three turned out to be for sex- selection, she said. FROM AROUND B.C.
