It’s a big gamble for the steely hero of Canadian heartland rock, mostly because it seems like a return tothe bad old days of 1970s progressive rock The “prog rock’ genre was an at tempt to meld classical motifs with rock music. But while bands like Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer en joyed a heyday, the style became en crusted in pretence and died in scorn Cochrane, wisely, is not trying to resurrect the genre — he just saw a chance to put his own music in a new context “I've always felt that our music had cinematic possibilities," says Cochrane, 36, who's likely to be found reading Robertson Davies or Graham Greene when he’s not composing and playing guitar. The symphony project began with limited horizons. It would be recorded for syndicated radio broadcast, but if it flopped, that would be the end of it. PIZZA SPECIAL of eq: value for Two concerts were set up last March at the Jubilee Auditorium in Edmon- ton, where a local disc jockey had Proposed the idea two years earlier. The setting was perfect, in a way, because Edmonton pop fans have always responded to Cochrane and his perceptive, hopeful anthems. More. important, the Edmonton symphony has historically tried to reach out to popular music. It collaborated recently h Alberta country queen k.d, lang and with local rock bands, and its populist bent goes back to at least 1971, when it sup- ported British rock stars Procol Harum on an album that became a million-seller. SOUND DELIGHTS There’s certainly a danger that the new Cochrane album, appearing in record stores on the brink of the "90s, will seem at first glance to be aif°illé conceived throwback. But listening to the record — called The Symphony Sessions — it’s plain that the orchestra was used with discretion. In fact, it’s a delight to hear genuine symphonic instruments in- stead of the usual substitute of syn- thesizers and samplers. **L knew right from the word go that I wanted it to be an understated thing,” says Cochrane. “The fear was that it would be a real bombastic, pretentious undertaking, but I feel the record captures the essence of what Red Rider is live, except that we have the augmentation of this wonderful orchestra."* The record also serves as a sprawling retrospective of Cochrane's 10-year about people that should haveacertain career, there’s a sense of integrity and in-depth knowledge of music — were not aware,"’ Cochrane says. “They'd I didn't know you guys did ¢ Fringe or White Hot,’ so I can’t imagine how many of the public might be like that."’ The new album may go some distan: ce toward correcting this. It comes on the heels of Cochrane's instant Canadiana classic the hockey song Big League — and it’s a safe get that newcomers to Cochrane’s music will be attracted to a greatest hits package. Christmas is also the time of year when these seis sell briskly, and Capitol Records is launching a marketing campaign just to make sure Still, looking back over Cochrane's Purpose that rises above commercial considerations, Only his fourth album, Breaking Curfew, is dismissed as a mistake, largely because it was made during a time of turmoil with previous management, Though he lives now in the Toronto area (with his wife and two daughters), the native of Lynn Lake, Man., retains a bracing, invigorating, pan-Canadian spirit in his music, . “I’m nota-greedy person, and | live very well and I feel privileged to be a star in Canada,”’ Cochrane says. “We can play in Toronto to 10,000 people and not read about it in the newspaper the next day, but you just take what comes your way WE MAKE BUYING INSURANCE EASY! 0) _ COHDE INSURANCE 1127-4th Street, Costieger Monday, Nov. 27 through to Sunday, Dec. 3 6:00 @ CBS NEWS go" is, bi ‘lt dn id rae hi AUTRE al gt ht a eens a8 abaagle ried! if e at bial Wid a 8 83 4 ibe WILD AMERICA (WED) E THIS OLD HOUSE (FRI) *@ MARKETING (WED) © CANCER TEST (MON) © HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN %§ ALVIN AND THE CHIP.
