He described Camp- bell’s newly-unveiled charter as “tokenism”™ “Instead of community control, there’s a real danger the whole province could end up being run from downtown Vancouver.” Campbell disagreed, stressing that it is the people of B.C. who control his party's agenda. He said the charter is still only in draft form. and is open for the public's review and input “We'd like to know how British Columbians believe the charter can be strengthened.” But Conroy said Campbell didn’t think much of public input during the negotiation of the Columbia Basin Accord, which the Liberals have repeat- edly opposed despite strong local support in West Kootenay. @ Noise Continued from A1 ed during normal business hours. “When I bought the land for my business it was zoned M-1, which allowed us to repair trucks. I"ve put a lotof money and hard work into that site, and the zoning says I have every right to be there.” With 15 full-time employees, and an annual payroll of nearly $600,000, Stach said his business is just as important to the commu- nity as nearby residents’ homes. O'Connor agreed. “The standard answer these businesses are giving is, ‘we were here first.’ Those home- owners built their places know- ing what was there, and they got good prices on their lots for that Teason,” said the mayor. “T think there's going to be a real need for some give and take on both sides.” FOODS IN-STORE BAKERY Wednesday, August 9, 1995 On schedule! A Nu-Tech employee was found last week helping build the roof of the new Twin Rivers Elementary School. Castlegar School District officials say the facility should be completed by the new year. School on schedule KAREN KERKHOFF _ Sun Staff If all goes well, Twin Rivers Elementary School students could be in the new school before the new year. John Dascher, secretary trea- surer for the Castlegar School District said the-contractor, Nu-Tech Construction of Castlegar has indicated that construction of the facility could be completed in time for Christmas holidays. Police briefs “That's assuming all goes well,” cautioned Dascher. The contractor had originally estimated that the facility would take almost a year to complete, but has since re-evaluated the amount of time needed for construction. It's planned that the roof will be completed by the end of this month, which will allow the workers to move inside for interi- or finishing before the snow flies But there has been a slight modification of the. original plans, explained Dascher—the SUN STAFF PHOTO /Karen Kerkhoff library’ size will be increased by some 500 square feet. “It was a matter of moving an exterior wall. It made a lot of sense, the roof was already there.” This increase will allow for extra instruction space Although the cost of changing the original plan is $57,000, Dascher said that there's a special contingency fund through the Ministry of Education for such unforeseen circumstances. The total cost of the facility is $4.3 million. Shingler’s list Castlegar RCMP report that Bruce Daniel Lajeunesse, also known as “Shingler”, of Pass Creek, is due to appear in provin- cial court Sept. 20 for allegedly passing a forged document. Police say Lajeunesse was trying to cash a cheque from a deceased person Charged Castlegar RCMP have charged = Park David Ralph Deschene, of Castle- gar with impaired driving, driving while disqualified and driving while over .O8. The charges come after an Aug. 6 incident at the Castlegar Community Complex Continued from 1A Lands will then report on the costs associated with developing the property. “We'll talk about the market value and sell it on the condition that it be serviced according to the engineers’ study,” explained Gustafson. Costs for such items as water and sewer and other development would then be the sole responsi- bility of the purchaser and be a condition of sale “The city doesn’t want to risk [money] if the property doesn’t sell. The service coSts could be quite high.” It’s expected that the property will be put up for tender in the fall and that there will be a zon- ing change to suit the tenant(s). “We believe there is interest in that piece.” +e The Castlegar Sun We’ve put high prices on ice for the rest of the summer season! * 5 program ( * automatic dry stop { drum lite *2 speed +3 wash’n rinse . aweer levels + 4 water levels +8 programs + Hand wash agitator + White 6 progral Reversible door 22 cubic feet CSM ISHUIASHERS Refrigerator Freezer - Undercounter - Exterior service * Crushed ice * Cubed ice * Water Saving of $200 Chest Freezers. 10 cu. ft. “3929 | j2cu. tt. . 935 - LIMITED SUPPLY - co, sor CMY, KS €s cow Time: 8:30 a.m THE APPLICATION PROCESS commencing on November 14, 1995 following locations BC Gas Unity Led BC Gas Utility Ltd.
