He was middle-aged, pre: viously healthy, and an‘active man. ‘The initial operation, a simple one, would normally have solved the problem, but the patient continued to bleed. ‘A farther operation was done, this time to remove the stomach. Due to a blood- clotting defect, bleeding con- tinued, and in’ spite of many transfusions the patient con- tinued going downhill. My. only contact with the patient was late one night when the surgeon felt he had to reoperate or'lose the patient. I happened to be in the hospital -and he asked me to assist him, We worked for. over four hours, repairing the rent in the stomach where the pressure of blood had ruptured the pre- vious line of stitches. ‘A further operation was necessary a few days later. The patient asked the surgeon to “let him go”, save the blood for ly to survive. {stopped Resuacitation measures were undertaken, with no ap- preciable effect.
