Board returns

Castlegar school board voted Wed-
nesday to reinstate noon-hour busing
for children returning home from
half-day kindergarten classes.

The trustees had decided in March to
cancel the busing as part of a package
of cost-cutting measures needed to
meet the district's budget imposed by
the Ministry of Education. .

Wednesday's reversal, made a
special behind-closed-doors meeting;
follows several weeks of protests by
parents.

“The number of letters, delegations,
and petitions convinced the. board that
(eliminating the busing) would impose

a hardship.” board chairman Doreen .

“It's still an extremely costly prop-,
osition and will cost $10,000 to $12,000
over and above last year's cost.”

Secretary-treasurer John Dascher

said in June that .$24,000 would be
saved by cancelling noon-hour busing.

far and added “there's a possibility of
15 more for a total of 178.”

The decision to resume noon-hour
busing affects many of those children
and their parents. '

Rod Retzlaff, a Glade parent who had
been prominent in opposing the elimin-
ation of noon-hour busing, said Thurs-
day he is pleased with the. board's.
decision.

Mill to get new kiln

two years.”

“It will take five, six or eight years to

get a return (on the investment)”, he

Kalesnikoff said the reason for the —
additional kiln is that people are used
to dry lumbeg and that green lumber is.
harder to sell.

“There_will also be substantial
savings on freight,”-he_added.

Kalesnikoff said the equipment-has——

been ordered and building will-start
next week. He estimated time for
completion as “a couple of months.”

He said the expansion might mean
the creation of one new job.

“The cost pf providing service to
Valley Vista is roughly $5,000,”
Smecher said.

A strike by 150:members of the
Office and Technical Employees Union
has hit all offices of Inland Natural Gas
Co. with a lone picket appearing
Wednesday at the ‘utility's Castlegar
office. :

“All our offices are being picketed,”
said company negotiator Gary Lot-
ochinski. “I would call it a general
walkout. z

the Castlegar office.

mediation since mid-June, are.at odds

More than 150 firefighters are
battling 52 fires in the Arrow Lakes
Forest District, a Forests Ministry
official said Saturday.”
“I won't term it explosive, (but) it’s
getting up there,” said Peter Barisen-
koff, duty officer at the Castlegar field
office.
Barisenkoff said the largest fire in
the district is near Silverton where 150
- hectares are burning. About half of the
154 firefighters are working in 35-
degree heat, trying to contain the
—blaze,-he said. — =
_. As well, the district is using five

helicopters to try to control the fires.

Barisenkoff said lightning started six
new fires Saturday. The district has
had_a total of 66 fires which have
burned 270 hectares to date.

Meanwhile, the air tanker base at—
Castlegar Airport is.on full alert, with
the three water bombers. in almost
constant use.

Bob Perchie, air attack officer at the
base, said the crews made one’ flight
Saturday morning to the “Lost” fire
between Kaslo and Lardeau.

“Right now most of the action is
here,” Perchie said. “We are waiting in
anticipation.”

Meanwhile, lightning continued to
start new fires in British Columbia,
causing 44 of 57 new fires reported
during the 24 hours to noon Saturday, a
Forests Ministry official said.

Nearly 2,500 firefighters now are
battling 515 fires burning across the

. province, said Ken Lines of the B.C.

“It’s burning between the power
lines and the top of the ridge so it’s
above the location of the ranches,” said
Paul Dean, operations superintendent
for.the fire district. “But the winds are
really changing and the fire's moving
quite rapidly.” -

_- Since April 15, a total of 1,254 fires
ave consumed 146,700 hectares
of British Columbia forest — an area
more than one-quarter the size -of
Prince Edward Island.

Lines said the last major forest fire
year was 1982, when more than 2,000
fires destroyed 331,000 hectares of
forest.

DUST CREATING
‘GRITTY’ PROBLEM.

_ Swirling clouds of dust emanating
from the Castlegar Community Com-
plex parking lot are creating a gritty
problem for about 60 nearby residents
who have signed a petition protesting
the: situation.

Robert Lutz, a long-time’ Castlegar
resident and retiree, circulated the
petition this week complaining about
the dust caused by cars. He says the
problem has been ongoing ever since
he moved into his apartment at
304-2204 6th Avenue — right across
from the parking lot — five years ago.

But, says Lutz, the grimy situation
has been aggravted by the construction
of a sidewalk last month on 6th Avenue
beside the parking lot.

Now motorists drive around the
sidewalk and down the length of the

entire: parking lot; causing even more__

dust than when they used to cross only
a portion of the lot’ to reach the
complex, Lutz say:

“I think people living ¢lose to the
complex area here have been patient
enough for a number of years. I think
most of them are disturbed about it. .

“Those are taxpapers as well, and
they live here. So it should be looked
at, anyway.”

Lutz said the dust isn’t-causing any

Reshaur pointed out that the si
walk now has two driveways algng

ing lot without going around the side- -
walk.

And the sidewalk will have a
six-metre-wide band of 2.4 metre tall
trees planted along it this fall, which

should partly alleviate the problem, he —

Long-term plans for the parking lot
include eventual paving, which would
end the dust problem. But that may
take awhile.

“I. don't know when that might
happen,” said Reshaur. “But it’s part of
the long-range plan.”

Lutz says the parking lot should be
either watered, oiled,.or paved. 5

“The best thing to do is pave it and
put speed bumps on it. Because if you
don't put speed bumps on it, you've got
a racetrack.”
