Darrel E. Lee, owner of Timmen's Landing restaur- ant in La Center in southwest Washington, convinced the state Gambling Commission to consider a proposal that would give card room opera- tors some flexibility in choo- sing the 20 hours they are allowed to stay open. Lee's proposal would allow licensed card room operators in Washington to stay open as late as § a.m. Currently, all card. room operators rust close at 2 a.m. Allowing a card room to stay open until 5 a.m., Lee said, would drive almost all illegal after-hours operators out of the business. Lee, who claims illegal card game opérators, parti- cularly in Portland, Ore., 30 km south of La Center, are involved in crime and giving card rooms a bad image. Lee said he grosses more than $500,000 US from his La Center card room ope: ‘tion. Aside from cutting ...0 his business, illegal operators are also involved in crimes such as drug peddling and prostitution, he contended. He ran off a litany of names of people he said ran after- hours card games in Portland and crimes they allegedly committed. One, Lee said, served time for armed robbery. Another, he added, is the prime sus pect in the firebombing of his Vancouver law office last year. “You sure you want to stay in this game?” Gambling Commissioner Pat Graham asked teasingly. Grizzly meetings planned WHITEFISH, MONT. (AP) — An annual field re- view of grizzly bear manage- ment in the United States will be the subject of a series of meetings later this month of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee. Research projects in the North Fork of the Flathead River area and the Selkirk Mountains, as well habitat management and the impact of bear management on local economies, will be reviewed. The meeting also will key n-the-role-Canada-plays—in conservation of U.S. grizzly bear populations, says a U.S. Forest Service news release. Four of the six U.S. grizzly bear recovery areas — Sel- kirk Mountains, North Cas- cades, North Continental Divide and Cabinet Moun- tains — are adjacent to Can- adian grizzly habitat. “Co-ordination between Canada and the United States is considered essential for long-term conservation of . .. grizzly bear populations (in these areas),” the release said. Da Vinci onetime cook MONTREAL (CP) — Leo- nardo da Vinci is known as the designer of the flying machine and as the artist who painted the Mona Lisa. But few know he also was a food lover who tinkered with kitchen appliances. Coinciding with the Mon- treal Museum of Fine Arts exhibition of the designs of the 15th-century artist- inventor, a British publisher has issued a small volume of da Vinci's drawings and writings about food, entitled Leonardo's Kitchen Note Books (Collins, 173 pages, $29.95). Da Vinci designed ma- chines that would stretch lasagne or roll spaghetti, crush garlic, roast food auto- matically in a fireplace chim- ney, blend ingredients for sausages, slice eggs, tumble- dry napkins or beat food. Da Vinci, whose mother married a pastry chef, wor- ked for a time as a restaurant cook.
