Included in the deal is MERC's broadcasting business which includes cable television operations in Mich igan and Florida and a radio station. Through its Michigan Gas Utilities Company, MERC provides service to an area with a total population of 500,000. The gas utility had a net in comeof $5.7 million US in 1987 on operating revenues of $118 million US. The deal is expected to be finalized by the end of the month. UtiliCorp has also announced its Crestbrook awards contract Crestbrook Forest Industries Ltd. has awarded a five-year contract to CP Bulk Systems to transport wood chips from company sawmill opera- tions in the East Kootenay to the Skookumchuck Pulp Division. The contract, which will run Jan. 1, 1989 to Dec. 31, 1993, was recently jointly announced by officials of Crestbrook Forest Industries Ltd. and CP Bulk Systems following a review of a number of proposals from major carriers throughout the prov. ince. The proposal by CP Bulk Systems was selected from six tenders sub- mitted to the Company including one from the incumbent carrier, Arrow Transportation Systems Ine. of Rich mond. Arrow has been the wood chip carrier for Crestbrook since con- struction of the Skookumchuck pulp mill in 1968. CP Bulk Systems will be opening a new terminal facility in Cranbrook for the operation. With the new five-year contract, a number of driver and mechanic positions will become available as the operations team is put together. Under the new agreement, CP Bulk Systems will transport wood chips from Crestbrook sawmill opera- tions at Canal Flats, Cranbrook and Elko. The 10-truck system will an- nually deliver over 255,000 bone-dry units of wood chips to the Skook- pulp mill, approxi: ly 35 miles north of Cranbrook. HYDRO SALE FINAL VICTORIA — Final agree- ments were concluded Friday between the provincial gov- ernment and B.C. Gas, a subsi- diary of Inland Natural Gas, selected in July as the purchaser of B.C. Hydro’s Lower Mainland natural gas distribution system. “This $741 million deal is the largest and most, complex trans- action of B.C.’s privatization program,” said Energy Minister Jack Davis. ‘It shows how pri- watization can open new oppor- tunities for economic and finan- cial growth while protecting the consumer. Everyone has come out ahead here.” Cabinet orders approved the government's final seal on the commitments agreed in the original Inland bid. The orders set up a three-year transition period, during which time con- sumers in the former Hydro gas service aréa are protected from all rate increases except those beyond the new owner's control. Other than rate reconstruc- tion already approved, the freeze will be extended to include consumers in Inland's current service area as well as in the Columbia and Fort Nelson EW The BUY A SEASON’S TICKET AND Show Your Support! ‘89 Castlegar Junior REBELS Next Home Game FRIDAY, OCT. 7 vs. TRAIL JR.
