TORONTO (CP) — A harvest of
risque cards this Yuletide season has
really put the X into Xmas: X-rated,
that is.

From mildly titillating to down
right obscene, the cards poke fun,
make puns and raise eyebrows in a
season usually swathed in good
wishes.

One card shows a sweet old granny
in nightrobes standing by the fire.

Another card pictures a leggy
young woman in a low-cut minidress
version of a Santa Claus outfit. The
card asks: And What You You Want
For Christmas?

“There's a real market for thesé
cards,” says Kathy Mantella, who
runs a card shop in west Toronto.
“People know they can go anywhere
and buy the traditional greeting but
it's amazing the demand for these
cards.”

People buy provocative cards with
a specific person in mind.

“Cards cost too much to send out
mass |mailings like people used to
do,” says Mantella, adding cards
start at $2 and up — way up.

“At first, we were worried we
would offend people so we tacked a
warning on the shelves that a certain
section was designated for adult
cards,” says Raymond Mantella, who
runs the shop with his cousin
Kathy. “Instead, people kept thank
king us for supplying them.”

ALL TIED UP

One card they say is a big winner
shows a gangly ‘nerd’ tied up in
Christmas lights. Inside, it says:
Time to Untangle the (expletive de-
leted) Christmas Lights!

This season alone, more than 140
million cards will be exchanged in
Canada — two billion in the United
States. Even the big-name card
manufacturers are coming up with
some naughty fare.

“The traditional greeting has had
to swallow a bit of its pride,” says
Monika Morgan of Hallmark Cards.

But Hallmark's cards are a little
more gentle with their messages. A
young woman in a tight red dress
invites the recipient to Jingle My
Bells. Another shows a showerhead
with a sprig of mistletoe and invites
the recipient to Meet Me Under the
Mistletoe.

Not all the irreverent cards have a
sexual tone. One shows a family of
turkeys sweating (or crying) as they
check the date on a calendar of
December.

Jane Matthew, a product manager
at Garfield Canada stores, says the
trend for titillating greetings came

KITCHENER, ONT. (CP) — Bar-
bie has basked in it many times.
Cabbage Patch Kids dominated it in
1983 and 1984. But this year, the
hot-toy spotlight shines on no-one,
store managers say.

Dale Ingrey, group sales manager
for a local department store, says no
single toy appears to be head-and
shoulders above everything else.

“There's nothing like the Cabbage
Patch that we can see on the
horizon,” he says.

“Parents are looking for quality
toys with play value like puzzles —
toys with educational values. As long
as there's educational value to the
toy, parents don’t mind spending the
money.”

But boys are still asking for G.I.
Joe, he says,

Ah, Christmas. This year, you've promised
yourself, things will be different. \You'll finally
recapture the magic of childhood, visions of sugar plums
dancing, and all that

Christmas Eve will be spent sipping a little cheer
before your beautifully decorated tree, as snowflakes
softly turn the world white. You'll bask in a sense of
peace and goodwill, especially when you look at all the
gifts you chose with such care — bought and wrapped
weeks before, of course.

And Christmas Day will be so exciting — the whole
family is coming for a sumptuous dinner and you can't
wait to see the delight on the kids’ faces when they see
what Santa brought them

But when the long-anticipated day arrives, all you
feel is disappointment

You're irritable because you were up until 4 a.m.
wrapping presents bought just as the stores closed
Christmas Eve.

The kids ignore their new toys, but love playing
with the boxes they came in. The turkey is overdone
and you're sure short on goodwill

EXPECT TOO MUCH

Many people approach the holiday season with so
much anticipation, it’s no wonder they suffer a let-down,
says Toronto psychologist Richard Allon.

“You set up certain expectations in your own mind
about what the day is going to be like, about what's
going to happen,” says Allon. “And almost inevitably, it
doesn't happert

“There's no reason to expect Christmas to be any
different than the other 364 days of the year,” he says.
“In many ways, it’s just a common ordinary day, and in
common, ordinary days there is some good, some bad
and mostly a lot of neutral stuff.

“To expect Christmas to be different
setting yourself up for a crash.”

“Even families that get along well during the year
have their ups and downs, their spats and difficulties,”
says Allon. “If one of those things happens on any other
day of the year, it’s accepted as ordinary. If it happens
on Christmas, it’s a major tragedy.

U.S. psychologists Carol and Jeff Rubin, authors of
When Families Fight: How to Handle Conflict with
Those You Love, say people may become testy when
Christmas present doesn't live up to the
childhood memories” of Christmases past.

MEMORIES HURT

For others, holidays may bring back painful

“The Christmas tree, menorah and Thanksgiving
turkey remind us . . . of all we had hoped to attain but
did not,” they say. “Holidays force us to project our
knowledge of the world as it is (dry turkey, a
disappointing job, loving without being in love) against
the world as we once imagined it would be.”

The Christmas season is also a time of taking stock
and thinking about New Year's resolutions, says
Endler,

“People start thinking about what they've done the
past year and what they expected they would do,”
say “With a few exceptions, most people are
disappointed in themselves. They're auditing their own
books.”

“Yet it’s foolish not to expect it to happen because
of all the stress. And when you've got extended families

on well then you've really loaded the dice.”

But psychologists say there aré ways to beat the
Christmas blues. Here are
minimizing holiday stress:

e Reduce the pressure on yourself by -keeping
expectations realistic.

Finish gift-buying early to avoid picked-over
goods, crowds and over-worked sales staff. Shopping
locally instead of in malls avoids the frustration of
traffic jams, lineups and the expense of travelling and
parking.

¢ Avoid overspending. Going into debt won't help
your mental or financial health. “Remember, it’s not
how expensive a gift you give, but the spirit in the
giving of it that’s most important,” says Allon.

e Avoid too much drinking — alcohol
depressant
well-being.

If you're going to be alone on Christmas, stock up
on books or videos, arrange to go to dinner with another
person who would otherwise be alone, or volunteer to
spend the day helping at a mission or hospital.
