Gary Glauser and Don Kosiancic Castlegar greater problem and at other times it can serve to build charac- ter on a team that lacks chemistry. Bither way, five losses in a row definitely has a tendency to maxi- mize frustration, bitterness and chaos. The Rebels were fully immersed in the dark and chaotic sea of defeat when they took to the ice at the Crypt last Saturday night against Beaver Valley. It was the second game of a home-and-home series versus the Nite Hawks that saw the Rebels lose in Beaver Valley the previ- ous night 5-4. The loss was the fifth in a row for the Rebels and the long bus ride home on Friday night culminated in a 45 minute late-night skate at the Complex where head coach Garry Sauer discussed the past, present and future - and he wasn't talking Canadian politics. When game time rolled around on Sunday, the Rebels found themselves hanging on to first place in the South Division by one point it was clear everyone was hearing the footsteps of the Rossland Warriors. But, surprisingly enough, the Rebels came out of the gate slow- ly in the first period. There were short spurts of good defence and flashy offense but the story on the scoreboard read 2-0 for Beaver Valley after the first period. Things did not get any better in the second as the Rebels gave up another goal midway through which had them facing a three goal deficit going into the third period: It was then that the natives in the Crypt began to get restless and there were more than a few low rumbles of disapproval. The third period was destined to become a supreme gut check for the young Rebel team. Things were beginning to slide out of control and someone had to put their skate down. Not surprising- ly, it was the capable skates and stick of Darren Pottle that turned things around. Pottle has been a money per- run approximately 12 weeks starting January 12 and ending in mid- March. Pre-season play has already begun so it is important to get your team together quickly. The league will follow a power pool format (three matches per night) with each team being responsible for monitoring other matches. Ma aches are best two out of three and games are won by the first team to 15 points. There is an entry fee and there will be prizes for winners. He has been an unsung contributor but he raised his voice in the first minute of the third period when he converted a pass from Mike Hunter. From then on it seemed there was no stopping the Rebels. The forecheck was working and the vast majority of the play took place on the Hawks side of cen- tre. Rebel all-star goaltender Mike Kooznetsoff only had three stops in the final frame of play. The improved forechecking led to more loose pucks which were quickly gobbled up and turned into goals. Hunter scored, then Nino Dacosta, and finally Jesse Oldham scored the game winner at the 12 minute mark. Kooznet- soff made a couple impressive saves down the stretch to pre- serve the victory while the defence gobbled up the rebounds like a hungry pack of wolves. It seemed everyone was satis- fied and that the Rebels had served notice to the rest of the division that they were back. But forechecking of aa like Jetf Evdokimoff (#5) and Sauer still has some concerns. “We didn’t play 60 minutes of hockey,” said Sauer. “There's no way we're going to win a lot of SUN SPORTS PHOTO / Jett Gabert games playing only 20 minutes.” “The problem has been that in See REBS — As of December 3rd, 1994 — NORTH TEAMS Sicamous Eagles Columbia Valley Rockies North Okanagan Kings GP WoL T POINTS 22 44 17 17 8 2 Rossland Warriors G.F.
