Chineso Minister Says Americans Ine STEYN’S BOERS GROW BOLDER Staters Engage British With Plan to Cut Off Dundee. PROJECT TMUST BE FOILED London, Thursday.—Latest intelligence indicates that serious fighting has commenced in Natal. Details are scant this morning. Hostilities were started by the Free State trcops advancing. from Tintwa Pass and engaging the British cavalry patrols with long range artillery. The firing continued all yesterday and itis ad- mitted that several casualties befell the British side. Sir George White pushed up his supports and everything indicates a big en- gagement soon. 3 Ladysmith has 3,000 troops and Glencoe on the other flank of the British line has.q,000. To envelop this line a very daring move of the Boers, Should they succeed in thrusting their col- umn between Ladysmith and Dundee they would isolate the latter place. London, Thursday.—Military experts believe that the British troops at Glencoe are only to form the rear guard which will at- tack the force under Joubert while White's full force is concen- trated at Ladysmith for the purp of Ki the Free State forces, while Joubert still quietly remains away. Cronje’s troops are the flower of the Transvaal forces. Apart ) from the desire to gain the initial advantage by the capture of - Mafeking, the Boers hope to mass in Bechuanaland which is full of cattle, and, being sparsely settled, offers opportunity for the importation of arms and ammunition from the west coast. Editor Stead Accuses Chamberlain of Aiding the Unsuccessful Conspiracy. London, Thursday.—Calling out the militia has added appre- ciably to the general estimate of the gravity of the situation. Ww. 'T, Stead has issued a pamphlet on war entitled ‘‘Are We in the Right? An Appeal to All Honest Men.” It is an indictment of Chamberlain's diplomatic policy and brings in the strongest relief * the persistent course followed by the colonial secretary through- out the negotiations with the patent object of forcing war on the Transvaal. The most 1 part of the pamphlet is Stead’s solemn declaration that Cecil Rhodes informed him that Chamberlain was privy to the Jamieson raid ‘and that the parliamentary inquiry into ww the origin of that conspiracy was hushed up because a point had been reached in the i ion which if ded would impli- cate the colonial secretary. CAPT. NESBITT STILL LIVES London, Thursday.—Private information from Bloemfontein says that Kruger has telegraphed President Steyn an account of the affair at Kraapin, where the Boers derailed the British ar- ‘ mored train carrying Captain Nesbitt and party. Kruger says Nesbitt and seven British were wounded, but nore were killed and all are doing well. b q In- { b q The Irish line regiments will be re- «4 placed by English ‘military battalions stationed in Irish garrisons, | § THEY DRIFT AGAIN International Yacht ‘Race Called Off by Tims Limit. COLUMBIA LEADS BY A MILE Gained the Advantage at the Start and Held It All the Time Before a Light Wind That at Times Almost Died Away. New York, Thursday.—Although the yacht race today proved another drifting match yet it demcenstrated again the superiority of the Co- lumbia, which was over a mile in the lead when the race was declared off. There was a light southwesterly breeze at the start but. later it almost died away and at the finish the wind was not blowing four miles. The race was quite obscured by the haze. The Columbia started at 11:01.333 the Shamrock, at 11:02. They rounded the outer mark as follows: Columbia ~ 2324.45, Shamrock 2231:03. ; At 12:40 the boats had. a good breeze and the Shamrock seemed crawling up to the other, but 15 minutes later the defender was fully a quarter of a mile ahead and kept gaining until 4:19, when the race was called off with the Columbia a mile in the lead. CBRAMBERLAIN,DENIES 15. Says He Had No Assoc! With 'Jamiceon Haid, London, Thursday, ‘The house ot was. ded today in anticipation of. a speech by Chamberlain regarding his: pol- icy in South Africa. ‘His . speech was often interrupted. ; With re- gard to the accusation regarding his associations with Cecil, Rhodes, he said that-at the time of. the Jam- eison raid he had no communication either direct or indirect with Rhodes on any subject connected with the South African policy.. Passing to. recent developments Chamberlain said he had hoped for peace and _striven to ‘maintain it, and up.to. recent date had, believed peace possible: He had always determined to secure justice for Britishe.s in South Africa and to maintain paramount the power of Great Britain, but with these things assured he desired peace.
