The use of retreaded tires can help to reduce this growing problem. And retreaded tires help con- serve oil, since tires are mostly made of petroleum- based synthetic rubber. Thanks to retreaded tires, North Americans are able to save over 400 million gal- lons of oil every year. Retreaded tires have the same safety and perfor- mance characteristics as comparable new tires, which is why retreads are used by every major airline, on fire engines—and other emergen- cy vehicles, school buses, taxis, all kinds of trucks, and millions of automobiles. Here are some interesting facts about retreads from the Tire Retread Information Bureau: ¢ Retread are avail- able in: all radial sizes and designs, including steel belted radials. + Retreads are an excellent way to save money and are widely used on pickup trucks, 4x4's and recreational vehicles. + A large percentage of scrap rubber on the road comes from. new truck tires, and nearly 100 percent is caused by misappli- cation (overloading and under- inflation) and not by faulty workmanship. Retreads are not responsible for rubber on the road. * The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency now man- dates the use of retreads by and local) is increasing. ¢ Cities, states and other government agencies can make significant savings in tire purchases by switching to retreaded tires, while at the same time setting a positive example for the motoring public. Car manufacturers are even looking hicles with recycling in mind. Vehicle recycling disassembly plants are on the drawing board in Germany, one built cooperatively by Audi and VW in Leer and the other by BI outside Munich. The “Green Car” movement, a drive to design produce environmentally friendly vehicles, is becoming popular. So what's the big deal, recycling has always been our business. are the original recyclers. We were recycling long before it be popular. We are recycling pioneers. A good friend of mine once told n that a pioneer is a guy with arrows sticking out of his back. Eves will probably agree that we have dodged our share of arrows over years but we have always been pioneers and innovators in this b ose of recycling. The problem is we forgot to tell anybody. We haven't do a good job of “blowing our own horn.” I believe this tidal wave of interest i in recycling has provided us with PR and ity. We are experts in the fi of recycling. It is relatively now to the rest of the world but we b been doing it for over 50 years. We need to inform people of these fag every chance we get. People are talking about recycling glass, plastic, paper, a aluminium cans, while we are recycling whole cars! We need to m people aware of what we are doing and what we have been doing fi over 50 years. We need to promote our recycling efforts in omf advertising. The Locator is helping us with this effort with their automobile - What a Terrible Thing to Waste” campaign but we need to incorporate this message into, our own ad campaigns. We need to inform our government officials about our contribution to th environment through our recycling efforts. ay Back in the 60's we were singled out as part of the problem, to taken care of by the beautification legislation. Now we can let know that we are not part of the problem but rather part of the solution. We need to promote the media to promote our industry. We hawm definitely had our share of bad publicity in the past but now we have an opportunity to be the “Good Guys”. We want the dismantler and used Parts to pop into the consumer's mind when they thing about recy not just glass, paper and soda pop cans. We want them to think Automotive recycling! Some of the things we need to tell people are that we recycle over eight million cars a year and that we are an important industry in the war against shrinking natural resources. Data shows that the savings arp substantial. Based on over seven million cars produces annually, ou industry recycles more than two million tons of cast iron, seven milli¢h tons of stee] and one-half million tons of aluminium each year. in addition, 200,000 troy ounces of platinum are recovered. When buses and agricultural equipment are added on with cars, over & million tons of iron and steel are p by This represents about 35 percent of the ferrous scrap recycled in bed US. Our industry also has a major impact on resource conservatidn. It takes from 5 to 30 times less fuel energy to produee metal from scrap than from ore. One study shows that the automotive recycling industry saves the equivalent of 80 million barrels of a annually that would otherwise be used to manufacture new Parts. The people that do know about us and even people in our ‘oman industry usually think about crushing cars and reusing the metal and plastic from those cars when they think about recycling cars. This has been called the long cycle of recycling, when scrap is added to virgin ore and combined with energy to make steel to make machines to make new parts, but we know that this is only part of the story. Our primasy business is selling used parts. This is referred to as the Shdtt Cycle Of recycling, which is the testing and putting to direct-use the used component parts. This not only saves the energy it takes to melt thie metal down and reuse it but it also saves the energy and resources at would take to make a similar new part. We need to point out that we not only recycle the parts but we also recycle the by-products such as freon, oil, tires and anti-freeze. This.js the story we need to tell to anyone that will listen. We also need to poiht out that recycled auto and truck parts are a bargain. People need to be made aware of the fact that they save 50 percent or more over the prite of new parts. You might say, “Used parts are always on sale.” We need to point out that used does not mean worn out. Used parts are already road tested! One yard in our town uses the slogan, “Our parts aren t used, their experienced.” We need to emphasize our warranties whichin some cases are as good as or better than new. ‘We now have the best opportunity that we have ever had to promote the use of used parts and our contribution to recycling. We are now'jn one of those rare “win-win” situations. We are doing our part by saving resources and energy by recycling, while we are also saving the consumer money. What a spot to be in. my wood pare, This nmancay -only about 3 to 4 percent of the people buy used parts. This points out the poor marketing job we have done thus far. If we just increase that percentage to 6 to 8 percent, we could double ar potential business and double our contribution to the recycling effort. '! What a marketing opportunity we have here when we can tie itin with the recycling wave that is sweeping the country.
