For the Mineral Exbibis The exhibit from this city at the 8 Spok we + Johu Lucas, formerly of the Clare endon, wilt be gind to receive his old patrons and fricids at the K The new site has been p for school purposes, and taking ad- vantage of the pretext that only one tender was received from local con- tractors, the government has fuiled to take even the initial steps to- ward the erection of the school building. It is now too late to be- gin work on the school building till next spring. Nobody in Rossland has heard anything at all officially about the appropriation in aid of the school of mines. It looks very much as if the gov- ernment, in making¢these appropria- tions, had no real intention of ex- pending the sums voted. It seems a great pity that the enthusiasm of the board appears to have cooled off just at the time it was most needed and would have been most effective. It appears quite likely that unless some action is taken by the board the government's promise to estab- lish a high school in Rossland after the Christmas holidays, will also become a dead letter. “ to be set off by a number of large and handsome photographs giving views of the various properties on Red Mountain, They were made by Curpenter, Industrial Exp i Atthe Seven Devils. The next regular meeting of the Board of Trade will be held in the rooms of the board on Wednesday of next week, The chief business to come before the board will be the matter of raising funds for car- rying on the work of the board for the remainder of the fiscal year. The sole reason for the present shortage of funds is the lack of in- terest shown by the members and business men, about half of whom take no interest in the affairs of the board and are in arrears for this year’s dues. This lack of interest has also reacted most unfavorably and it may be disastrously on mat- ters in which Rossland is vitally concerned. To be more specific. The board sent delegates to Victoria toward the close of the last session of the legislature to try to secure appro- Priations for seveial things of ur- gent ity to the ity. Among those were: a wagon road to Sophie mountain, a new school building including a site, and the establishment of a school of mines in Rossland, An appropriation of $6500 for the Sophie mountain wagon road; one of $10,000 fora site and building for the new school; and one of $2500 in aid of the Rossland school of mines, were included in the sup- plementary estimates.
