The onset of heavier rain, fog and even snow, combined. with the retum to Standard Times are all factors in making our roads more treacherous. Just-as you look after yourself with warmer socks and sweaters to beat the chill, your faithful car or truck might appreciate a bit of attention too. A complete safety inspection would include a check of the brakes, tires and exhaust system, of course, but if your vehicle has been running a bit rough, a minor tune-up might also be a good idea Don’t forget to check radiator and heater hoses and all the fan belts. “Murphy's Law” says they are only allowed to break when the weather is the most rotten and you're the farthest away from a gas station Speaking of the heater, if yours isn't working well, your engine thermostat might need replacing. It's inexpensive and not only will you appreciate the added comfort, your windows will clear faster Clearing windows is often the first order of business prior to heading out and keeping them clean is vital. Set yourself up with a decent ice-scraper, treat your car to a new set of wiper blades and top off the washer fluid. Have. your shop or favourite handy-person check all your vehicle's fluids, such as the anti freeze, power steering fluid and brake fluid. Even the so-called “maintenance free” batteries can run low on fluid, so have some: one who knows how to handle them check yours out before you put it through the stress of winter Start-ups. Finally, take a walk around Block parent program could save lives KAREN KERKHOFF Sun staff How would you feel if you could save just one life? We all have it in us to do so a person doesn't have to be strong or brave to be ‘a hero. One simple act could save the life of a child, our most precious natural resource All one has to do is become a block parent—someone who is willing to hang a sign in their window letting children know that their home is a safe harbor and one in which a frightened child can find safety and help. Castlegar Block Parent Coor dinator, Ida Cleeve, is dismayed at the apathy exhibited by some residents, and, even worse, two schools within the area. To be involved in the Block Parent Pro- gram schools are required to pay $10 annually, said Cleeve “Two schools didn't even pay last year. The money came out of my own pocket, and I'm a pen- sioner.” Not only are there few block parents in the area, Castlegar doesn't even have a sign at city limits which announce “We Are A Block Parent Community” Even though the program is already over a year old in Castle gar, Cleeve said there are only S9 Block Parents in Castlegar, Rob- son, Oouschenia and Blueber ty—-far from Cleeve's geal of two or three per block What if one isn’t home What do the children do then? Cleeve said that being a block parent doesn’t mean a person has to stay home all the time. If they want to go out all one has to do is tum their sign around. Nor does block parenting require spending any money, she added. It's free to them. They might never get anyone at their door. it’s just a precaution.” Cleeve's commitment to the program is evident as she speaks about it, and her voice can't dis- guise the sadness and embarrass- ment she feels when she speaks about Castlegar’s lack of Block Parents. “It makes me feel good when I see the signs in the windows.
