When it comes to local fashion, Bonnett, owner of Bonnett’s Men’s Wear, is the fresh faced rookie, while Streloff of the Kootenay Klothes Kloset, is the seasoned veteran. Like a lot of other local business people, Bonnett followed in the family footsteps. “It was always my father’s dream to have a clothing store,” she said. Fred Bonnett opened Bonnett’s Boys and Mens Wear in 1965 and managed it until his passing in 1989. After reaching a mutual agree- ment with her brother, Heather took control of the business, even going as far as to change the name. “I bought him out and, after renovating, re-opened in March of | 1990,” she said. Streloff didn’t follow in any fam- ily footsteps, though he does own the Klothes Kloset with his wife, Ruby. ~ Sharing an interest in fashion, Joe and Ruby opened for business in 1972, yet it wasn’t a childhood. goal for either. “There wasn’t any special rea- Heather Bonnett and Joe Streloff clothe the men of Castlegar just over a block away from each other on Columbia Avenue. From leather jackets and jeans to blaz- ers and pleated pants, Bonnett and Streloff have their tape mea- Na eee 9 sures ready and waiting. Bonnett says that a lot of what she sells is dictated by the fashions -of the day, but she also keeps an ear open for what the young peo- ple in the area want to see. “The kids in Castlegar like to see us follow a trend,” she said, “They keep you informed. In a one industry town like Castlegar, there is a more relaxed look to fashion, something both merchants recognize. “We joke with the suits,” Bon- nett said, “It’s either for a wedding or funeral. “They're bought for a particular reason.” Streloff agreed, saying that fashion in the workplace is chang- ing. “Fewer professional people are ‘wearing suits.” He added that wardrobes are becoming smaller, saying that sports jackets can now be compli- mented with a simple tie or blue jeans. “Customers are going with few- er items, and making them more serviceable,” he said. ~Year after year, men’s fashions remain fairly consistent, but both Bonnett and Streloff have noticed some recent changes. : “Men are going into flowers, paisley,” Bonnett said, “A more ap- pealing selection in the color end.” Streloffhas noticed the trend in colors, as well as a move away from man-made materials. “Men are wearing all-natural fi- bres,” he said. ~ With the Celgar expansion in full swing, both‘ merchants have noticed an increase in customer traffic. And with an increase in cus- tomer traffic, there’s just that many more men of Castlegar for Bonnett and Streloff to clothe.
