will li.ry Piwer Before I start on happenings over the past weekend, I want to correct something which I should have reported on in last week's column. The matter was brought to my attention by a curling buddy of mine, Hal McCormack. I neglected to say that the trophy he and his wife donated to the Play-for-Fun tournament was in memory of their son Mark. He was a member of the Play-for-Fun League until his untimely death. The trophy this year was won by Gary Stanton, judged the most sportsmanlike player. Staying with hockey, this weekend saw another excellent tournament take place at the arena as 10 Atom teams vied for the spoils which go to the victors. It showed the spectators a lot of classy hockey for youngsters 9, 10 and 11. There were some games in which one team dominated while some others were seesaw battles right down to the wire with only a goal separating the contestants. Unfortunately, I could not get to the Friday night games as we were invited to the Warrior windup but I feasted on hockey Saturday and got to watch one of the championship games on Sunday between curling games in the Legion One-Day Spiel. Talking to Dan McFarland later, I gathered they heard nothing but good reports from all teams and fans alike. Dan, brother John, and Don Brandt were in charge and the whole thing ran like clockwork. One facet of this tournament was the introduction of stoptime for the last five minutes of each game, and raised to ten in the two championship games. I wouldn't be surprised if the Play-for-Fun tourney adopts this rule an?ther year. In close games last week, the only trouble officials had came in the closing minutes of close games. Those red and white caps you '11 see around town in the days ahead were given to each boy who took part in the tourney. They'll pop up in Trail, Castlegar, Grand Forks, Nelson, Beaver Valley, Creston, Slocan and Rossland. The fans also took a liking to them and snapped them up while they lasted. Nelson won the battle between the top teams in each section as they topped Rossland's Red Warriors 5-0. They had a pretty rugged bunch of boys and went undefeated to take the top prize. In a battle for third place it was Champion Sports topping Shoppers Drugs by 1~. Both teams were from Trail. Proceedings were held up for an hour on Sunday as the Winter Carnival's Mountain Run kicked off at the arena. On Saturday the opening ceremonies delayed things for half an hour while on Friday night the start was held up as the figure skaters had the ice for an hour. But as I said before these things did not cause any major problems. Things were really well organized once things were under way they just kept rolling. The Warriors do at the Parish Hall saw all the boys from around the country who came to play in attendance. Bill Profili acted as MC and his years of public speaking stood him in good stead, and he got his share of laughs. Bob Whitlock told me that he'll be back again, along with Rich Chobanuk, I imagine. The meal, as always was -supplied by the Warrior ladies and delicious, as it always is. One always tends to overload one's plate at these fine meals. The KIJHL's retiring president, Terry Skarbo, was on hand to outline plans ahead for boys in the league and they all sounded good tome. Sunday was the Legion's One-Day 'Spiel and we had a good turnout of rinks as men came from all over to play in teams drawn from a hat. Jim Bateman was in charge. and did a fine job of handling the sixteen rinks entered, playing three six-end games alternately in two sections. My rink was composed of Norman McLeod of Trail, Willie Dorey and Rollie Ellis, both members of the Rossland retirees and came out on top. We had a shootout with Jim Bateman's rink when we were tied after three games at 15 points each. I didn't need to shoot after my rinkmates gave me a 7-0 lead after Willie hit the button and Norman made the four-foot. Jim Markle's foursome edged out Jim Schuck at the wire in the other event. Jim Bateman had Jake McLeod as third, No~ Fishwick second, and Darrell Morrow lead. Markle tiad Erv Hamel as third, and two Rossland youngsters, Lee Flanders and Gary Seefeldt at the front end while Jim Schuck had Cleve Cowland at third, Steve Melnyk second, and Al Stinson lead. After the action was over at the rink everyone moved down to the Legion dining room for one of our ladies delicious stew suppers, an annual event on one-day occasions; and the presentation of the awards. I would like to say 'thanks a million' to all the out of towners who came along to enjoy the day with us. That's the theme of our aMual one-day, enjoy yourself. While on the Legion, Branch No. 14 will host a cribbage tournament in the Legion basement this Saturday, Marcli 8, starting at 7:30 p.m. There are still openings for those who see themselves as hot cribbage players. Drop in and get your name on the list. And with that, we'll say, 'til next time then!
