The Vancouver papers have been getting themselves all wound in a tangled mess of sophistry as to how the members of the Dunsmuir gov- ernment could sign a request for the dismissal of Gov. McInnes, and yet retain office as his ministers. Nobody else exactly saw how it could be done, but they just waited, in sublime confidence that it would come out all right. Events have justified their confidence. Thunder- bolts did not come down and hit Messrs. Dunsmuir, Turner and Eberts, nor did an angel come down to protect the sacred, scented person of Mr. McInnes from insult. Mr. McInnes is going and ‘the Dunsmuir government remains. Ot course, it was unusual for the members of a government to reé- quest the removal of the man -for whom they are the official hands .and brains, but then, matters have gotten into a habit of being unusual in the public affairs of British Co- Inmbia. Most of the things which have been done during the last two years have been unusual. Extra- ordinary diseases require drastic remedies. It was most irregular to cut off Charles I's head, but so it was for Charles to make war on his parliament. If Gov. McInnes had not violated precedent and ignored the traditions which underlie the practices of every country enjoying responsible government, it would sition. He is now paying bills with printed 1. O. U.s and holding to his gold.—Seattle Times. The Vancouver correspondeni of the Toronto World says that ‘It is known that in several constituencies, the election of spposition candi- dates was secured through the grossest corruption.” The Boers have quit their laagers and are now grouped around a water tank at a railway siding where Kruger’s capital gar is,— Toronto Star. The acceptance of oftice by Mr. James Dunsmuir may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. The fact that he has managed. successfully the largest business interest in British Columbia should qualify him to superintend the affairs of the province, and whie he may not be able to pay dividends to the people, he will likely get it nearer a paying basis than it has been any time since the ‘‘wreckers” took hold.— Nelson Economist. The crisis in China has now reached a point where a peaceful solution of the difficulties is no longer possible, |The all-absorbing question in the United States at this time is, what part will this country take ‘n the affair? If the United States keeps out of it alto- gether, she will lose her commercial interests, and -if she joins with the other powers she must inevitably take part in the division of the spoils. —Spokane Chronicle.
