86 _ Castlegar News December 5, 1990 REGIONAL NEWS Recycling hours extended The Regional District of Central Kootenay Recycling Depot has ex- panded its operating hours and is ac- cepting additional materials for recycling. Located at 519 Front Street in Nelson, the Recycling Depot is now open Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m, to 4:30 p.m. In addition to taking newspaper and fine-quality paper like ledger, photocopy and computer paper, the depot now accepts clean glass bottles and jars (without lids), flattened tin cans (without labels), aluminum cans (preferably not crushed) and corrugated cardboard, recycling coordinator Michael Jessen said in a news release. Jessen said many Nelson businesses are taking advantage of the depot’s new baler and bringing their corrugated cardboard to the Recycling Depot. “Both Nelson city council and the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce’ have endorsed a resolution urging all city businesses to deliver their cardbaord to the depot,’ he said. Individual businesses which have vehicles are encouraged to bring their cardboard to the depot at their con- venience. “We are working with the city for @ solution for those businesses which do not have any vehicles,"’ Jessen said. ‘‘The cardboard must be kept dry and free of contaminants like food waste, plastic or waxed car- dboard. “Our best institutional customer is Kootenay Lake District Hospital which brings us cardboard and fine quality paper.’’ Jessen gave special mention to Oglow’s Paint and Wallcoverings Ltd. in Castlegar for the distance the company travels to avoid having its “*We're hopeful that in this pre- Christmas period when the volume of cardboard will be near the yearly high that other businesses will find a way to get their cardboard to the deput,"’ Jessen said. ‘'It really makes a difference to the size of a store's waste stream."" Updating the community on the volume of material that has been recycled to date, Jessen said three truckloads of newspaper (almost 75 tons) and one truckload of fine- quality paper (almost 14 tons) have been sold. “The fine-quality paper was gathered from Nelson area offices and schools and was shipped to Richmond via a truck hired by Eaglefoot Recycling to bring a load of recycled paper from Vancouver to the Castlegar school board,”’ he said. “This was a good example of waste shipping Mathew Tupholme (left) of Ist Robson, and Steven Maloff of Ist Kinnaird, shared the r Beaver award at the annual the age District Boy Scouts held Nov. 28 at the Community Complex.
