C4 Female alcoholics not a concern OTTAWA (CP) — Em- ployers don't take alcoholism as serisouly among female, workers as thoy do among their male counterparts, says the head of a Toronto treat- ment program for alcoholics. “It’s a crime, but it’s a fact,” says William McGinnis, general manager of the Ren- ascent Treatment Centre, who is investigating the fea- sibility of an employer- referred alcoholic-treatment centre in Ottawa. He says employers have the greatest influence in get- ting treatment for alcoholics, During the last 18 years, 150 companies have referred al- coholic employees to the cen- tre's facilities for 28-day live-in treatment. “But only 10 per cent of the corporate referrals are fe- male. Employers tend to take the attitude that the female employee is not as committed to her career, and often man- agers are simply frightened to death over how to make the approach for alcoholic treatment.” Because it is considered a disease, nobody can be fired for alcoholism in itself, says McGinnis. But if it affects job performance, it is often used as grounds for dismissal. McGinnis says employers are more likely to encourage male alcoholics to seek treat- ment because they generally have more seniority and skills the employer doesn’t want to lose.
