his five-metre-long Smith Mini DSA-1
with no injuries after he manoeuvred
the plane from a height of 1,200 metres
into a clear area on the north end of the
park, beside Arrow Lake.

McLeod said Tuesday that the
20-year-old plane suffered a “few thou-
sand doligrs” in damage to its under-
carriage atid Gié'wing after Tt narrowly
missed an open field and ran into some
rocks in the park.

“Another 20 feet and I would have
made it,” said McLeod.

He said his plane began stalling
during a recreation flight from Castle-
gar airport, so he started on his des-
cent using “partial power,” gliding the
rest of the way down when his engine
stopped completely.

The engine problems were caused by
water in the gas tank, McLeod said.

“It sat out there (Castlegar airport)
for a week in the rain, and the con-
densation built up at the top of the
tank, and the water dripped off the top
of the tank with the vibration . . . and it
went down to the fuel line and plugged
up the carburetor.”

McLeod, who's been a pilot for 20
years, said he didn’t panic when he
realized an emergency landing would
have to be made from 1,200 metres.

“You get a little — not worried, but
your mind starts working pretty fast
trying to figure out the problem,” he

said.
After the 280 kilogram, 115 horse-
power aircraft was landed, McLeod re-

it home in a trailer.
