Dr. Ronald Evens of the Mallinckrodt Institute ference to criticize the study for overlooking the number of lives saved by early detection. He said he did not question the study's meth- ods, but the manner in which its findings were presented. “Extrapolation from this . . . to say that women at 40 should not have mammo- graphs is absolutely wrong.” Evens said. At issue are standards for the use of breast X-rays to detect breast cancer in’ its earliest stages. Events said the American Cancer Society and other groups have started sup- porting X-rays for younger women because of technology that has lowered the level of radiation exposure. The U.S. National Can- cer Institute has continued to suggest that women under 50 only undergo X-rays if they or their families have @ history of breast cancer. All agree that women under 35 should not undergo breast X-rays. According to the study, 670 out of one million women over 40 who start annual two-view mammograms would develop X-ray-induced cancer from older equipment used in many clinics. Teens seek advice on health concerns MONTREAL (CP) — They wonder whether they're tall enough, what the right age is to start having sex and how to recognize the symptoms of sexually: transmitted diseas- y- “Teenagers feel awkward when they’re with doctors,” one 16-year-old told research- ers for the study. “At times helpful.” The study provided the basis for the Teenage Health Unit, which was established in March 1986 at the hospital to provide a place where teenagers can get advice on health-related concerns rang- ing from colds to contracep- tives. Since last fall, doctors from the unit have spoken to near- ly 2,000 students about health issues. The health unit is one of several developments in the relatively new field of adol- escent d to I cannot fully with my friends and family. Havipg a doctor or someone to listen to and guide us would be most gratifying and CPM units selling worldwide TORONTO (CP) —Nurse Mita Samani of Nottingham, England, began jumping for joy when she saw it dem- onstrated last year, and rea- lized she had to have one for her hospial. So she headed a fund- the continfous motion unit. The CPM units, or Mobi- limbs, were invented by Dr. Robert Salter, head of ortho- pedie surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. They're made by Toronto Medical Corp. of suburban passive parachute debut. 27-year-old plans to take to the silk again because her employer, England's Univer- sity Hospital, needs at least three more CPM units. Samani, on a promotional trip to Toronto that was sponsored by Toronto Medi- eal’s British distributor, Straumann G.B. Ltd., said the unit continuously bends and straightens the injured limb — a reversal of the address the health and often overlapping social issues in the inereasingly complex) lives of teenagers. HEADS DEPARTMENT Dr. Jean-Yves Frappier, in charge of the adolescent seér- vice at St-Justine’s Hospital, categorizes his patients into four main groups: — Problems related to growth, puberty and nutri- tion, such as anorexia and bulimia, and general medical problems; — Problems linked to. the use or abuse of drugs; — Sexuality, including con- traception, pregnancy, sex- ual identity and dysfunction; — And, social problems, which include a wide range of symptoms, ranging from an- xiety and psychosomatic headaches and stomach aches to fatigue, behavior prob- lems, depression and vio- lence. + These social problems are often intimately linked to an adolescent's environment, said Frappier, 35, an asso- ciate professor in the faculty of medicine at the University of Montreal. Violence is one of the most disturbing new problems fa- ety in which these teenagers live — one where parents wrapped up in their own lives may neglect the child and profound than ever. REJECTS CHILD “In separations and div- orces, the stands the two parents take are more firm,” says Frappier. “There is an intransigence you didn't see before. “Another thing: “I am see- ing more and more situations in which a parent just rejects a child outright.” Adolescent medicine had its birth in the late 1950s and early 1960s, a time when many young people could not be reached by the traditional medical system, explained Dr. Alan Pavilanis, director of youth services at the Mon- treal Children's Hospital. The system has matured with more services being es- tablished. The service Pavil- anis heads is marking its 25 anniversary and treats about 2,000 adolescents annually. But despite the myriad of problems, treating adoles- cents is not always grim. “We see a lot of kids who are quite healthy and coping with adolegcence in a cre- ative way,” says Dr. Michael Malus of the Jewish General Hospital. “They're the ones who are still dreaming~I think they keep you asking whether your dreams are being real- ‘endorsed with the project riame and contract number, will be received until the closing date PROJECT: Upgrade Water Supply System at!
