No surprises for Swede

and even ended up on the
seat of his pants after a
bruising bodycheck, but
Winnipeg Jet defenceman
Fredrik Olausson said his
first NHL game didn't hold

ferent than the pre-season
series,” shrugged the 20
year-old native of Vaxsjo,
Sweden, after the Jets’ 3-2
defeat of the Buffalo Sabres
in Thursday's NHL season
opener for both clubs.

first game against Minnesota
during the pre-season than
tonight.”

Winnipeg coach Dan Ma
loney said he was pleased
with Olausson’s performance,
but said the blond-haired
youngster still is adapting to
the rugged North American
style.

“You have a great deal
more contact, especially
against a big team like Buff
alo,” said Maloney, a hard
nosed player himself during
his 11 NHL seasons.

“You've got to move the
puck quickly. It's not like on
the big rink (in Europe)
where you have that extra
five or 10 feet. That's some
thing he'll have to learn. He's
a young player and I'm happy
to have him.”

“I have problems reading
the menus,” he chortled.
“Besides that, it's not too
much unlike Sweden.”

Olausson, who scored a

“First of all, many people
in Sweden want to come over
here because it’s a nice
country,” he said in his slow,
deliberate English. “It's the
toughest league of all in the
world. It's a challenge for me
as a hockey player to get
over here and play.”

Patrick quits
hockey
at age 25

QUEBEC (CP) — Combine a sour tere in hi mp

Hockey League career at age 25. -

Patrick, who abruptly retired during the Quebec
Nordiques’ training camp, said he had had enough of the
game and simply wanted out. .

“It had nothing to do with Quebec,” he said in an

Patrick was the Buffalo Sabres first pick in the 1980
draft and 20th overall.

He started the 1980-81 season in the junior ranks but
the Sabres brought him up midway through the season.
Patrick scored one goal and had eight points in 30 games.

In 122 games in four seasons with Buffalo, Patrick
had 20 goals and 27 assists before the Sabres traded him
to the Rangers.

New York was coached by Herb Brooks and Craig
Patrick, and Patrick produced for them, scoring 11 goals
and 29 points in 43 games.

With Ted Sator behind the Rangers’ bench last
season, a couple of players, including Patrick, had

QUITS THE TEAM

Mark Pavelich's dislike for him had the high-scoring
forward quitting late in the season and veteran defence-
man Barry Beck is sitting out the 1986-87 campaign
because of a disagreement with Sator.

“I didn't get along with Sator,” Patrick said. “I didn't
like Sator at all. I think that just took a lot out of me.”

In 27 games with Quebec, Patrick had four goals and
17 assists and, when training camp opened, he was only
one of two right wingers in camp with NHL experience.

Patrick said he was in shape when he reported to the
training camp, but he didn't have the drive anymore.

“I just felt something was missing, something wasn't
the same,” he says, “I gave it a couple of days.”

“It seemed like a surprise when I retired because
nobody knew it was on my mind. I didn’t think it would be
fair to myself and fair to the Nordiques if I waited until
January.

“The money was nice but it never made me terribly
happy.”

Back in Winnipeg, Patrick is gearing up to take a
couple of courses so he can join his father in his insurance
and real estate business.

Patrick speaks some French and said that being an
anglophone living in a French atmosphere was fun and
challenging.

“I enjoyed Quebec,” he said. “It has a good night life
for a young guy. I thought it was ‘kind of fun, going out at
night, going to bars.

UNFORSEEN
DELIGHTS IN
WINNIPEG

Ne delight is fully delightsome without communi-
cation; and no delight absolute, except imparted. —
Montaigne from Essays.

The famous French essayist and philosopher might
have added: “and the greatest delights are those which
are unexpected and unforseen.” I would like for a few
minutes to do a little imparting on unforseen delights.

Three weeks ago we left on a circuitous two-week
trip with a few days in Vancouver at one end and a few
days in Winnipeg at the other. Winnipeg is historically
the gateway to the great Canadian West and I was
interested in making my. first acquaintance with such
places as Fort Garry. the first trading post, and the
Church of St. Boniface, the first church, and the famous
Red River, all very much a part of our national history
and, I was told, a “must see.” In Vancouver, gateway to
the east, was of course Expo 86.

Furthermore, with the increased perception of
tourism in Canada as the industry of the future (the only
one left since we will have sold everything else), I
intended to look at all things on our journey with the
critical eye of a tourist who knows that whatever they
have here we have something better at home.

Ignorning for the moment all other points of interest
in between, we first take a look at our 2'-day stay in
Winnipeg. My last look at ground-level had been
therefore from the windows of a troop train. I was not
therefore so much surprised at the flatness of the
landscape as the flatness of the citizens. I had expected a
lively, animated, bustling people, eager to sell the city
and its interests to the visitor. But as one attractive
young lady, a former Montreal resident, said a little
wistfully,” Winnipeg is a quiet conservative city.”

And at first it seemed to be so. For example, the
service and catering at the Holiday Inn where we stayed.
did not quite live up to its enthusiastic advertising claims,
and a large plate window at the front entrance which one
hurried gent had attempted to walk through remained
unrepaired for almost two days. It would not have
happened in Castlegar. See, critical tourist!

Again, one of Winnipeg’s main tourist attractions,
Fort Garry, seemed to be an almost unknown factor to
the city bus personnel, so that on incorrect information
we stood on a street corner for an hour and a half waiting
for a bus which would never appear. Moreover, when we
did finally find our way to the fort, it was closed for the
summer (open on Saturdays for September). A great
disappointment and poor tourism.

Then things began to perk up. The sales began in
Sears and the Hudson's Bay and any woman not
galvanized into instant life by such an event is dead
indeed. Bunny was definitely not too well. She bought
virtually nothing. I bought a pair of dragons.

Then came dinner with relatives, a well travelled
young couple, (or at least they were 20 years ago), marine
biologists who are doing research at the university on the
effect of acid rain and organic toxicants on small
organisms. A most pleasant and entertaining evening

During the next two days we toured the city on a
double decker bus, (Pick-up and delivery at the hotel);
visited St. Boniface; Cathedral, lovingly presented and
preserved as a heritage site, and toured the Museum of
Man and Nature, done after the manner of the Provincial
Museum in Victoria but with less sense of style (that
tourist again!)

It is still well worth seeing, particularly since one is
able to walk aboard the full-scale model of the Nonsuch,
the first fur trading vessel out of Hudson Bay. It marked
the beginning of the company and the great west fur
trade. The original made its historic journey to the
Rupert River in 1668. The model, built in England in 1970
to honor the 300th anniversary of the company, is the
most accurate model of a 17th century ship anywhere.

Our most unexpected pleasure came, however, when
we went in search of a place to have dinner. After
examining and turning down several possiblities, we
arrived at the Charter House Hotel and Restaurant at
York and Harhrave. With such a name the omens had to
be good. They were

Though the large, tastefully decorated dining room is
almost full there is little noise, the background music,
semi-classical, is just at perception level, and the lighting
subdued by adequate both for privacy and reading the
five-_page menu. The staff is well dressed, moved about
efficiently an unobstrusively and at least half are male.
Don't ask me about this last. Restaurants with all female
staff may be very good, but they may also be awful. When
one finds an establishment with at least a 50 per cent
male staff it is almost always good

crisp. Ice water tinkles in the tall glasses. There is a full”

set of flatware, a covered basket of warm rolls and break
sticks, and most importantly, a full butter dish of
tastefully arranged butter portions and ice.

While waiting for our barbecued baby back ribs,
specialty of the house (16 oz. at $6.96), we have our salad
— crisp, green and without a suggestion of excess
moisture, and served on a shining, metal underplate
which both protects the cloth and keeps the salad cool.
Just before the entree arrives, I read the instruction on
the back of the menu which says “The Art of Eating
Charter House Ribs.” With this injunction I put all
reservations aside.

We came again the next night, our last, this time
with a friend, Shirley Richards, who is taking her
post-graduate degree at the University of Manitoba and
had worked on the Rotary team on Zuckerberg Island
park project in 1983-84. It was her birthday plus one, an
excellent excuse for a party and we had a lovely evening
— again

I have mentioned only one dish on the menu of the
Charter House. It lists, however, a wide range of
entrees, salads, cold and hot sandwiches, 17 entrees, six
different fish dishes and a variety of desserts — all at
reasonable prices.

There is also a liquor list entitled “Spiritual
Encounters” which features, besides a considerable list of
cocktails, liqueurs and liquors some totally exotic items
such as “Charlie’s Angel,” “Fever Reliever”, “Colorado
Bulldog”, and “Spiritual Seduction.”

It is an excellent house and is run by manager
George Gershwin, a man who obviously knows what he is
doing and enjoys doing it. It is worthy of its gold medal
award and I am happy to recommend its menu and sense
of service to any other tourists from home or abroad

Then there is Expo 86. We had gone there not
without some reservation. There was no doubt that it was
a success, but the advertisements and ballyhoo made it
seem larger than life and I had my doubts that it was
more than an overgrown circus. I now wish to offer my
apologies. It was in fact another of those unexpected
pleasures, and deserved all of the good things reported
about it

Besides some of the fine shows and displays, what
struck me most forcibly were the less publicized aspects.
It worked efficiently, it was remarkable clean, trans
portation of large numbers of people was well done and
the staff were courteous, helpful and cheerful.

All contributing donations had an opportunity to do
the best they could to show themselves to the world, and
in my opinion Canadians did it best of all. There was a
sense of pride in national identify and achievement which
has not seen before.
