Clash of royalty at
Kinnaird Park

The Slocan Valley Royals have
been the team to beat all year in
the West Kootenay Mens Fastball
League and that actually hap-
pened for a brief period as the
Castlegar Cobras found their way
to top spot in for a week. But that
all changed last Wednesday night
as the Cobras and Royals met at
Kinnaird Park with first place on
the line

The Cobras were riding on the
backs of an impressive winning,
streak going into the game and they
looked to continue that by jumping
out to a 3-1 lead in the thrid inning
The biggest blow of the inning
came off the bat of Sheldon Sooka-
choff who came through with a
bloop single that scored two runs in
the three-run inning.

However, Royals third base-
man Kevin Sutherland came up
with a pair of big hits in the
fourth and fifth innings driving in
a runseach time as the Valley

innings but Darcy Dickson's solo
home run in the bottom of the
seventh cut the score to 5-4, But
that’s as close as they would get

Fortunately the two teams
won't have to wait long for a re

town tonight to take on the

BCJHL game more than hockey

The mill in Castlegar has been working overtime
in the’ last couple weeks and I'm not talking about
the one that spews out pulp. In fact;this mill, at
jot closer to pulp fiction than anything

times seem:
based in reality.

The rumours are flying fast and furious down the
streets of Castlegar and people are churning out new
ones faster than you can say “Sherlock Holmes”,
which is who you would have to be to figure this

one out. Either him or Woodward and Bemstein.

All the excitement comes from
a few basic facts and obser-
vances. The first is that, in the
hockey world, Castlegar is quick-
ly becoming a mighty big fish in
a small KIJHL pond. After all,
no other KUHL city has a Cana-
dian Tire

The second harsh reality is that
nobody has any interest in the
Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey
League even though “Bronco”

Horvath seems to be an extremely interesting guy.

So that means if the Rebels want out of their pond
they have to make a big jump to the BCJHL pond.
And as luck would have it the Kelowna Spartans
may be up for sale at a reasonable price.

That whirr you hear is the rumor mill shifting into
overdrive.

Castlegar Rebel President Robin Tomlin hears the
whirr too and it sounds like the biggest buzz saw in
the world to him. That’s why he doesn’t plan on
adding any more fuel and why he’s keeping relative-
ly quiet about the whole thing.

As far as Tomlin is concerned, it's business as usual.

“As of now Castlegar is Junior ‘B’,” said Tomlin.
“T went to the KJHL AGM last weekend [in Sica-

mows] and I told them Castlegar will be playing
KUHL hockey this year.”

But if Castlegar was to make the jump to Junior
“A” hockey this year, it wouldn't be the Rebels
spearheading the way anyway. Private interest and
money would be needed.

Enter Bryan Bucci.

Bucci is a big fan of Castlegar, a huge fan of
sports and an enormous fan of hockey. He is also a
well-respected business man and not a bad golfer.

He has personally talked to the

owner of the Kelowna Spartans,

ON teams, and he has plans to talk to

them in the future. If you likened

the situation to golf, Bucci would

“Yes, I have made inquiries
based on bringing a higher level
of hockey to Castlegar,” said
Bucci in a phone interview Monday night. But he
refused to go any further than that.

Prevailing opinion is he's already hit a nice drive
into the fairway but can still only catch a glimpse of

ready to convert on an eagle and build a new
cluBhouse to boot. Either or, it’s still Bucci’s golf
bag and his shot to make.

All Bucci is doing is taking his time and ponder-
ing his next shot. Patience in golf is a key and in
business it is rare. Only the best have it, the rest are
just caddies giving advice.

Bucci doesn’t need advice, he needs the mill to
slow down so he can get some peace and quiet to
select the proper club.

Canada Cup shreddin’ in

Mountain biking fans got
everything they could ask for as
the @anada Cup Tour stopped in
Rossland on the weekend,

Sunny skies, dry conditions
and ‘some thrilling finishes made
for a memorable weekend for
fans and organizers alike.

The excellent conditions also
attracted a bevy of racers as 318
cyclists registered for the cross
country event, 147 for the down-
hill and 36.for the dual slalom.

“It was just about perfect,” said
organizer Terry Miller. “We had
nothing but good comments.”

That was easy to understand
following Saturday's photo fin-
ishes in the cross country event.

Victoria's Andreas Hestler held
off Martin Vale over the final two
laps to win the pro-elite men’s
event by a mere four seconds.

The women's pro-elite event
proved to be almost as close as
Ontario's Chrisey Redden was
the first to cross the finish line in
a time of two hours, 14 minutes
and 39.09 seconds. That put her
38 seconds ahead of Melanie
McQuaid of Victoria.

For Hestler, who posted a time
of 2:07:20.80, the win was his
second in as many Canada Cup
races after capturing the season's
inaugural event in Whistler.

Chris Sheppard was well back of
the fiery finish in the men’s event
taking third in a time of 2:10:29.56.

In Sunday's downhill at Red

Mountain, Rossland’s Chris
Lawrence was on the losing end
of yet another-close finish among
the pro-elite men.

Infielding Drills

Simulation Drills: (without a
ball) Players lineup facing the
coach, The coach asks the group
to assume the-correct position
upon command (i.e. resting,
ready, and fielding).

Cross-over and Field Drill:
(without a ball) The players are
in the ready position and the
coach asks them to cross-over
(i.e. right or left) and advance
three of four steps before gliding
into a proper fielding position
Repeat several time$ in the same
direction and then change to the
other direction.

Cross-over, Field and Throw
Drill: (without a ball) The same
procedure is followed as above
except a throwing action is
added. After completing a field-
ing motion the player simulates
the correct throwing technique,
employing the crow-hop.

Group Ground Ball Drill
(with ball) Team members are
divided into three groups. Balls
should be rolled directly at them,
to their left and their right. With
each repetition the player
assumes the ready position, then
breaks for the ball, fields, and
throws it back to the coach. The
player then moves to the end of
the line of the group.

Group Pop-up Drill: (with
ball) The same procedure in the
ground ball is used, except that
balls are tossed in the air in vari-
ous directions.

Partner Drill: (with ball) Pair
players off when they have pro-
gressed to a point where less
observation of techniques is
needed. One partner can roll
ground balls or toss pop-ups,
while evaluating his/her part-
ner’s fielding skills. This drill
provides many repetitions in a
short period.

Bare-Hand Drill: The above
drills that utilize a ball can be
conducted in the same manner,
but without the use of a glove.
The drill accomplishes two
things: it forces the players to use
two hands and it encourages the
hands to draw back slightly upon
impact with the ball.

winner Andrew Shandro, who
clocked a time of 5:51.47 over
the four-kilometre course.

Another Rossland rider, David
Swetland, finished in sixth place
with a time of 6:08.94.

Among the pro-elite females,
B.C.s Elladee Brown claimed
first with a time of 6:46.48 with
Christine Rutley of Alberta in
second place.

The treacherous downhill
course took its toll on several
competitors and their bikes with
one female rider suffering a bro-
ken collar bone.

However, quick reaction by
the core of first aiders brought
quick attention to'the rider who
was taken to.the Trail hospital
and later released.

Miller said every rider had a
chance to test the course and,
much like the cross country, all
had good comments.

Saturday's cross country race
also gave organizers a chance to
test Second Avenue as anew
start location.

“Logistically it went well,”

Shawn Von Diebitsch

said Miller, referring to the con-
venience for parking as well as
registration at the Fire Hall.

During last year’s Canadian
Championships, the start and finish
for the cross country was held on
Columbia Avenue, however, this
year, organizers wanted to see how
things went from a different spot
looking ahead to a possible World
Cup race coming to Rossland.

“It wasn't a big deal. It was
just a test to see,” said Miller.

Gerick’s team out of Castlgar and
he has moved up to the Expert
class this year after racing with
the Sportsemen last year. He is a
rising star in the sport and will be
one to watch in the future

In the downhill, Geoff Kabush
of B.C. won the junior male and
Carrie Tuck of Alberta won the
junior female. George Grey took
second among, the junior sport
men 15 seconds behind winner
Jonathan Foulgér of B.C. Zac
Freeman and Cary Evans won
the expert male and female
events respectively.

While the Canada Cup cir
