The Castlegar Sun Happy 90th birthday “First Mt is true politeness, ventle ness and love of humanity that constitutes the real lady Anne Lancaster Our tirst lady of Castlegar Marjorie West, celebrated her ninetieth birthday on Tuesday September 21, and I would like to join all of her other hundreds of friends in wishing her as much joy as she has given us over her great score of summers, for she is a very special lady indeed 1 first wrote a column-on Mar joric in 1981 when she was my age, and I opened with the very perceptive Lancaster quotation above, I then went on to state that: “Though the basic requisite for the title of “lady” is to be born a woman, the final product involves certain essential inborn qualities together with a great deal of effort and self discipline.’ Castlegar pio neer, teacher, wife, mother, artist and friend to many is Marjorie West She was born in Nelson, the One such lady second well-trained daughter of excellent parents, Matilda Jane Stevens and pioneer CPR rail wayman, Thomas Lees Bloomer “Quite near the brewery,” says Marjorie thoughtfully, then adds with one of her famous smiles, “but it didn't have any effect” The Bloomers then moved almost immediately to Castlegar but found that there was no school in what was then called “Castle gar Junction”. Thomas Bloomer, a well-read Englishman, had strong opinions about the need for an education so he and several other Castlegar parents petitioned the Government to remedy the situa tion. Soon thereafter, with the assistance of the Anglican clergy Save $50 BC man, James Ross Calquhoun, a school was built on the site of the present Eremenko building across from where Marjorie lives today ind hired a teacher, the late Clara Barkley Graham, to run it. But first, the late € oldest daughter, ‘@ Bloomer, the was brought home from her boarding school in Kamloops and she and. the four year-old Marjorie and brother Percy were both enrolled in the class to make up the required minimum of eight pupils. Thus Marjorie, though not Castlegar 's oldest resident, became the city’s oldest citizen. Her sister Lillian, now a resident in Nelson, was much too young for school Clara and Marjorie both became Castle gar teachers later, and Percy a well-known mining engineer in the the East and West Kootenays In her fascinating book, “Kootenay Yester *, Clara Graham notes:"Castlegar was a remarkably congenial neighbour hood for a beginning teacher However, the princely base pay of $50 a month, of which $26 went to Mrs. J.J. Farmer (The Farmers ran the one general store in town) for board and room, did not allow enough money to be saved for further education S a conse quence Mrs. Graham taught here for only two years and then left to seek her fortune in greener pas- tures. I (rust that she found them, for forty years later when I came here the base salary had risen to an equally princely salary of $120 a month. In the meantime, the Bloomers moved to Nelson and Marjorie and Clara continued their educa. tion at the Central School and Nelson High School, then the Normal School in-Victoria. After Wednesday, September 22, 1993 graduation they both had « brief leaming-and teaching-the hard way” session at Cold Creek in Fernie. This brief encounter was followed by an appointment for Marjorie to the the two-room Castlegar Elementary School (about where the court house is now) with Mrs. T. Normal as principal “Many of the younger children in those early classes couldn't speak English, Marjorie recalled, but it was remarkable how quick ly they learned to read, They were lovable little children for the most part - Molly Holuboff was an absolute angel.” She paused, then added thoughtfully: “There were a few little devils as well, though.” After two years of teaching she married Ralph West, a Canadian customs officer, and by the rules of the day had to resign her job, since women teachers who mar ried then were subject to instant dismissal Shortly thereafter the Wests moved to Castlegar, bought the Farmer's store (located about where the dry cleaners is now) and so began West's store, even- tually to become West's Depart- ment Store, and here their son Don was born. Part of the store was devoted to the village post office where Ralph doubled as postmaster.-One recent visitor to the Railway Station Museum, a former mail clerk on the Kettle FEATURING FIREPLACES UNTIL DECEMBER 10, 1993 Plus Scratch ‘n Save even more if you purchase by October 30, 1993! Lady” Marjorie West Valley run, recalls him making a regular, mad dash to get the mail bag into the mail car before the train pulled out The upper part of the store served many functions in those days - meeting hall, surgery, police office, and holding-cell, among others, while the Wests became equally involved in the early community and an essen tial part of Castlegar's short history. About thirty years ago Mar jorie started painting, a hobby which she continued to devel op with great success after Ralph’s death in. the early ‘70's “It not only enables one to see things in new and different ways,” she says in that earlier interview “but it offers endless horizons for learning. And as well, it keeps me young.’” The intervening dozen years however, by illness, injury and operation have dealt harshly with that outlook, bending her body but not her spirit, limit ing her mobility but not her mind, so that any visit with her is a very lovely encounter full of laughter, memories and wit “I'm getting old", she says, “I can’t remember things any more.” “You're getting older, not old”, I answer, “and you remember a heck of a lot better than most of us. In fact you're as sharp as a tack” “A blunt tack”, she retorts - And anyone who believes that self-evaluation is due for a real surprise The poet Shelley said it most See CHARTERS AN ALL-STAR CAST OF NATURAL GAS Gas Showcase ‘93 is back for another exc iting season with Wednesday, September 22, 1993 Adolescents ha Last week, I concentrated on a topic that was not directly con \ nected to the usual theme of my column, usually teen-related items,—politics.
