Participants of the West Kootenay-Boundary Table were brought together by the Commission on Resources and Environment (C.O.R.E) to make recommendations on how land should be used and resources managed in the West Kootenay-Boundary region. This is the first time in provincial history that people within the region have been asked to assist in a planning process of this size. . The Table been asked to make recommendations to the commissioner and government on land use, policy around land use and resource and environmental management including protected areas, transition strategies for those that may be affected by land use decisions, implementation of the overall recommendations and instructions to sub regional processes for more detailed planning. Government has also stgted that further input to the Protected Areas Strategy will be through the C.O.R.E planning tables. We are organized and participating in this planning process on an interest or sector basis. Sectors are defined as groups of people sharing the same general interests around land use in the region. Sectors represent a range of interests including agriculture, applied gical lity economic development, First Nations, fish and wildlife (commercial and recreational), forest independent (contractors and diversified small scale), labour-woodworkers, labour, local government (RDCK, ROKB, and RDCS), mining, North Columbia environment, primary forest manufacturers, provincial government, outdoor recreation (motorized and non-motorized), South Columbia environment, tourism (associations, heritage and resorts) and watersheds Our next meeting will be on March 3-5, 1994 in Nelson.
