6- Trail Times -- Friday, April 2, 1982 I As l wrote this Wednesday, winter was having its last fling of the season. Between two and three inches of new snow fell during the night making the skiers happy. However, up in the arena yesterday they were busy clearing the ice out of both the curling and skating rinks. By the time we had finished our Retirees' club wind-up bean feed the attendants had given all the floors a washing and the area is now at rest. Speaking of that Retirees' windup, between 50 and 60 members and guests sat down to a really great feed of beans, weiners, pickles, cheese and the traditional sourdough bread. All this was put together by club member Freddy Thompson, bi:i wife Viv and some assistance from club president Cleve Cowland. And it was good, I mean good. Guests included Father Maglio, who was honored with a presentation during the proceedings, some of Rossland's super-old-timers, steve Bowen, Dave Tweed, Alfie Albo, Ralph Berry and Wally Hocking and last, but wil l=>EPP-]ALK ,.... Hsry not least, one not-so-old retiree, Charles Cholak. I hope I haven't missed any, but if I have I'll probably hear about it. I certainly don't want anyone to feel left out. Master of ceremonies George "Gimmick" Dyson was up to his usual tricks. There were a lot of the type of prizes that George specializes in and they all went to deserving club members and everyone had a good belly-laugh, including the recipients. I was saved until the end and got a monstrous green frog with a hanging lower lip, George told the gathering that it was what I looked like when I come out to curl on his rink in the Zone 'spiel on Sunday morning. Among other good laughs was one when Toby Edworthy got a package of garbage bags to help keep the front of the house clean. Toby said afterwards, "Anyway, it's something I can use.'' Then the real prizes were presented, and there were a few repeaters. The trophy given the club by Jack Molyneux and Bill Scott and named the Oldtimers trophy was won by Angus Popplewell's rink of Jock Irvin, Gordie Brennan and Gil Besso. The Canadian Legion trophy went to Dick Cotton's rink of Jock Irvin, Ab Nichols and Toby Edworthy. The Rotation trophy was won by Phil Bateman with help from Jim Thompson, Al Besso and Clyde Nyman. Phil became a double winner with the final trophy, the five-man mini-bonspiel prize, in this one he had assistance from Jock Irvin, Ab Nichols, Jack Mitchell and Ted Holloway. Some mention here should be made of the part played by Chuck Harkness in Phil's five-man win. The competition saw Phil short a man on his rink when he played my rink. Chuck was my lead and I gave him to Phil for two games and he contrived to pull a Judas act and help the opposition beat us. Anyway, all in all it was a really fine season and we look forward to many more like it. The Legion Zone 'spiel, held last weekend in our town was, by any yardstick one wants to use, a pretty successful effort. There was help from the Legion ladies and some non-playing members who saw to it that we didn't want for food and drink. The organizational part, handled by Phil Bateman and Angus Popplewell was well done and the competition was really keen. When all was tallied up the spread of prizes was pretty well shared by the various club with entries in the 'spiel. In the "A" event, George Beaudry, who is a Rossland club member, skipped his rink composed of three Nelson members, George Barefoot, Len Bicknell and John Bowles, to victory over Phil Bateman's Rossland foursome with the Bob Freeman rink from Kaslo earning third place. In "B" it was Harry Bale's rink from CasUegar winning out over George Dyson's Rosslanders, Mel Buerge's rink from Nelson took third in this competition. In the "C" event Fred Munro of Rossland kept the top prize in the home town with the Graham Roberts rink from CasUegar earning second place and Alex McKinnon's foursome, also from Castlegar, placing third. This 'spiel was the first in this area to see ladies playing in a Legion competition, the Dorothy Fines rink with lady Legion club members gave a very good account of themselves and two other rinks which had girls on them were in the money, namely, the Roberts foursome and the Freeman group from Kaslo. And now, some notes on the Ladies' Club windup, 26 members and a guest, Marjorie Buruett, sat down to a delicious supper served I by the Legion Ladies. After supper a short business meeting preceded the presentation of prizes for the season's play by prize committee chairman Dottie Albo. Winning the Cominco trophy were Marg Rosse's girls, Corrie Bateman, Mary Vickers and Laura Thompson, next were Dorothy Fines and her rink composed of Dottie Albo, Ruth Dougan and Jessie Skinner. The Orwell trophy was won by Gert Sandulescu and her three-girl rink, Beryl Davis and Ruth Dougan, Helen Ling was second helped by Irene Dunlop, Mary Vickers and Carol Jackson. The Smart trophy was won by Dorothy Fines with assistance from Beryl Davis, Mary Vickers and Jane Westbury, Edie Harasin took second in this one with help from Irene Dunlop, Dorothy Lilburn and Viv Thompson. This year the Ladies' Club wound up their season with some fun curling, low score winners were Edie Harasin, Dorothy Fines, Jane Westbury and Viv Thompson, in closing her report, Fanny Albo said the ladies would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy summer. Winners of the door prizes at the windup were Nonna Dominici and Mary Vickers.
