Over the weekend four Rossland members of Branch #14 went over to Christina Lake for the annual Can-Am golf tourney. Some things about this tourney have always puzzled me and a few other people i Know. For instance, last time at the Chewelah course there were a lot of Canadian golfers. I would say almost as many as Americans. But this year the Americans were few and far between and Canadians were there in the usual numbers. I would very much like to get some opinions from some people who are interested as to why this situation seems prevalent. Don't the Americans like the courses designated in Canada? Or what do you think? I'd like to hear some opinions on this subject. Anyway, to get down to the meat of this tournament. The four guys from Rossland were Bert Pengelly, Jim Schuck, Bart Dudley and yours truly. Sam Browne and Bill Kelly attended from Castlegar and Ernie Secco, (or was it Primo) from Trail. In the winners categories it was men's low gross was Ben Buisson, 76, Al Becker, 84, and Chuck Boutillier, 85. Sam Browne won low net with a 64, followed by Alf Peterson at 65 and a quartet of 66s Roger Barvold, Rod Milward, Charlie Busby and Jim Cates. The last two were on the same foursome as Al Becker and myself. Incidentally, Jim Cates was also the winner of the long drive and Chuck Boutillier was closest to the pin. Nothing here shows which hole was designated for this competition. In the ladies' competition, Vi Turner took first in low gross with a 100 and Barb Secco was next at 1115. In low net it was Aggie Petersen at 74, followed by Jean Calder at 75. Jean also won the closest to the pin and Barb Secco had the long drive. In the hidden hole department Vi Petersen of Spokane was first and Judy Brown, second. In the special prize department it was Joanne Langlois for the high score after three holes. Cathy Tucker won the most honest lady golfer and the honor went to yours truly in the men's section. There is another name for this but it's not used sometimes, in fact most of the time. The golf was followed by about a couple of happy hours in the Grand Forks Legion, with a fantastic piano player. There was dancing after the prizes were given out and a couple of farewell drinks to see us on the road for home. A really great day. And still the golf comes up, with 56 out to Retiree's day this week on a very nice Tuesday. Rich Watkinson passed along this information regarding the winners. Stan Fisher won low gross after Bill Batuik, Jim Scott and he had to draw to get a winner after all three came in with 42s. In this week's low net competition, Rich made a new little wrinkle, all golfers over 80 added a point to their handicap for every year over 80. Noland Garrison came in with a 31 and Gil Page a 33, not quite good enough to catch Al Bublitz 's 30. In closest to the pin on second shot on #4, Jim Scott was the winner while the long putt on #9 went to Bill Orenchuk. Barney Boyczuk won the hidden high hole which was #1. Another new one this week was chipping in and the following all had one with Bud Hachey taking the draw out of five with Emil Kwasney, Mr. Volpatti, Chuck Wyatt, and Bob Whalley. Jim Scott will head up a group of next week's desk job and with that I think I'll say "Fore" and call this off for now. So, 'til next time, then.
