If you're the type of person that likes to lore different Ss
of recreation, take a drive out to Woodbury Creek near ainsi
and try sailing.

Be forewarned, however, that you will not be engaged in a ‘ho
hum’’ passive recreation. As John Ziegler (better known as ‘Ziggy’)
would say: “‘The only similarity between power boats and sailboats
is that they both floatl’’

- When you get into a power boat you head towards your
destination, but the minute you get the sail up on a sailboat, you’ve
reached your destination.

Sailing is a very interesting recreation. It can be learned in an
afternoon but it takes a lifetime to master. It’s more than just going
down to the water and going for a ride — you end up devoting a lot
of time to it. For a technical person, it’s like playing with a
sophisticated toy, experimenting and tinkering with the rigging to
make it go a bit faster and sail with a little more ease.

If you like speed and excitement and don’t mind getting wet the

Laser is for you. It was derignea about 10 years ago by Bruce Kirby
as.a fun, teaching tool to get people over the fear of sailing.

It’s prime feature is its simplicity. You can learn the basics of
sailing. coupled with a lot of fun in one afternoon and it even
fascinates the “seasoned” sailors. It can be sailed with two people
in winds up to 40 knots.

The Laser Isa very safe boat and'is used in Instruction to get
people over the fear of sailing. People are nervous. at first in
sailboats because they don’t ride flat. Their normal ovement ison
an angle of about 10° - 15°. :

Large (cruiser) sailboats must be very poorly managed to tip
over but capsizing is part of the fun in operating the Laser. It’s
designed so everything floats and it is lightweight soit can be

flipped upright in a few seconds. Its design also allows it to drain.

‘cottage. It has all the conveniences but you don’t have to pay the

taxes, the hydro, or oat: the lawn and ‘nothing need be said about
savings on gas!

Oh yes, there’s sailing on Kootenay Lake from late
February through to December. Even though the c cruisers are like a
cottage to their owners, you ‘still ride‘on‘an angle and are always
problem-solving and tinkering in order. to goa little faster and
easier.
