Skating Carnival Besides hockey action, there is plenty of figure skating happenings with the local Fig- ure Skating Club playing host to their annual ice carnival to be held this Saturday. Jim has placed in the Canadian Figure Skating Championships on various occa- sions and this year, at the championships held in Victoria, he placed third in the Senior Men's competition. . Me you happened to watch the-Canadian Ci of age and older. Men and women are most welcome to take in this event. The program will stress effective forms of self-defense as well as providing physical fitness, conditioning and im- proving flexibility and co-or- dination. The Graphic Design course, which was to be held Wed- nesday evening at the Complex, has been cancelled. Self Defense A self-defense or Jui Jitsu coursé, under the leadership of Jack Hamelin, will be offered again starting March 16th in the Community Complex. This course runs for 12 consecutive weeks every Tuesday and Thursday. This activity will be suit- able for any persons nine years Minor Sports Registrations The minor sports organi- zations are preparing for the summer season by readying themselves for registration weeks. Persons interested in’ registering a youngster for Minor Ball, Minor Soccer or Girls Softball should watch for announcements which will be appearing in the next week or so. Helen's Flower & Gift Shop 365-5191 Cross-Country Races Held by Nordic Lodge ‘The sun wasn't shining, the snow conditions were not quite perfect, but that did not deter some 60 of those lean, slope- shouldered and hungry-looking skiers from showing up at Nancy Greene Lake on Feb. 28th to take part in: Nordic Lodge's Fourth Annual Nordic Ski Race. Lodge members have worked all winter in developing new trails and their efforts received the approval of all participants. The cross-country race drew competitors from Castle- gar, Cranbrook, Kimberley, Rossland, Trail, Salmo, Nelson, Grand Forks and Spokane, who filled the full range of cate- gories offered this year. In addition to individuals, the skiers represented the Koote- nay Nordic Club from Cran- brook, Red Ski Club by Eric Gundersen of Castlegar and the Juvenile Girls, by Heather Smith of Salmo, In Midget Boys (10-12), Hans Edblad of Castlegar took first, followed by Ethan Smith of Salmo and Arne Brattebo of Castlegar. The. Peewee Boys was won by Guy Crisfield of Rossland followed by Michael Rourke of Salmo and Simon Mais of Trail. In the Peewee Girls, Chris- tine Edblad of Castlegar took first, followed by Margo Gun- dersen of Castlegar and Sheryl Stover of Spokane. In addition, there were a number of skiers who entered the open and citizen races, where the aim was to complete the course but with little pressure as to time, All com- petitors received a Nordic Race ribbon and all Sunior Olympics and Nordic Ski Touring Club of Castlegar. As with most such races, the Senior Men's (19-34) was the highlight evant, won by Karl McKusack: of Cranbrook, followed ‘by Kyo Jibiki of Fruitvale and Guy Woods of Rossland. Kootenay Nordic swept the Veteran Men's race (35-49) with Jim Logan of Wardner in first place, followed by Gerry Kemp of Kimberley and Dune MacDonald of Cran- brook. Nordic Ski Touring Club came back in the ladies’ com- petitions. In Senior Ladies, Randi Lynch of Nelson placed first followed by Pam Woods of Rossland and Ursula Brev of Cranbrook. In the Veteran Ladies, Britt Edblad of Castle- gar took a commanding lead over Audrey Mann of Grand Forks and Janet Stover of jpokane, All the youth {under 19) races were operated under the Junior Olympics Program of the Canadian Olympic Associa- tion, The Junior Boys (16-18) was won by Kevin Taylor of Castlegar, closely followed by Andrew Fossey of Cranbrook and Geoff Yule of Castlegar. Junior Girls was won by Katrina Edblad of Castlegar. - Juvenile Boys (13-15) was won d crest. The Chief of Race, Ivar Reinsbakken, stated that the race has shown a_ steady increase in participation since its inception in 1975. He was quite satisfied with the entires, in the senior components, but hopes that there will be more participation in the youth cate- gories in the future. He added that Nordic Lodge will be working for the next year to develop more * diverse and more challenging trails for next winter. One week before their own ski meet, on Feb. 19th, 20 Nordic skiers participated in races sponsored by Creston Cross Country Ski Club, held at the summit of the Skyway.
