ularity of rappelling with the
forest service than the built-
in glamor.

While descending by
rope from a helicopter to
fight fire has dramatic appeal
rappellers of Kusawa Con-
tracting Ltd. serving the
Nelson forest region swear it
ends when their feet touch
ground.

“Rappelling,” says com:
pany manager John Horning,
“is just another way of get-
ting a suppression team to a
fire that is inaccessible by
road. Our main aim is to put
out fire. Rappelling is a
function of that role. Getting
to the scene quickly while a
fire is small is what makes
the system attractive.”
