The president of the United States’ has opened for settlement on October 10, 1,500,000 acres of tich farming land in the north half of the Colville reservation. A long time since, this land was set apart at the request of what was then a great tribe of Indians, known as the Siwash. In due time, these Indians so degenerated that it is now difficult to find among this once powerful nation a single full- blooded Indian. The great number of white immigrants, who drifted to the northwest many years ago, took the Indian maidens for their wives, and now only halfbreeds can be found. Even the Chinaman found his way into that country, and, un- like him as arule, he followed in the footsteps of his white neighbor, and intermingled in marriage with the dusky siwash. After many years the white man began to petition the government for the privilege of farming a por- tion of this rich reservation.
