Jim Pattison, the businessman who oversaw Expo 86 in Vancouver, placed third. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Sinclair Stevens, his controversial industry minister who resigned after conflict-of-interest allegations, were tied for fourth. Of the more than 400 editors eligible to vote for the most newsworthy Canadian during 1986, 170 cast ballots, 141 of them for Hansen. But Hansen, a Williams Lake native with clean-cut good looks and a genial manner, doesn't see himself as a hero — at least he didn't Monday night in this Northern Ontario community midway between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. He had spent the day wheeling nearly 100 kilometres up and down hills. IS FLATTERED “I'm overwhelmed and flattered to think I'm considered newsworthy,” he said, relaxing in a motel room with Amanda Reid, his physiotherapist and fiancee. “I started this tour as a messenger and a catalyst for good things to happen. I treat the hero issue with a lot of cautious concern. “I don't want people to lose focus of the really true objectives of the tour and what I'm doing.” It isn’t the first time a physically disabled athlete has been named Canadian newsmaker of the year. Steve Vonyo and the late Terry Fox, who each lost a leg to cancer and embarked on runs across the country to raise money for research, were the editors’ choice in other years — Fonyo in 1985 and Fox in 1980 and 1981. Mulroney was top pick in 1983 and 1984 and hockey superstar Wayne Gretzky got the most votes in 1982. Hansen, paralysed from the waist down in a car accident when he was 15, has already travelled through 33 other countries on his Man in Motion marathon. He launched the Canadian part of the tour in St. John’s, Nfid., last Aug. 26, his 29th birthday RAISE MILLIONS His quest — inspired by Fox, who was a personal friend is to raise $10 million for research and create more awareness of the potential of disabled people and wheelchair sport Nearing the halfway mark of his tripjacross Canada, he has raised $4.2 million and expects to finish the Canadian tour in Vancouver by mid-May. “Fund-raising is secondary,” he insisted. “Capturing the enthusiasm of youth is far more important. Setting goals for young people to achieve, showing them how they can deal with setbacks is far more important.” Hansen, a world-class wheelchair athlete, recently encountered some of the worst weather that winter can offer. And the prospect of his lonely trek farther up through northwestern Ontario and on through the bleak Prairies is anything but comforting. After three days of pushing through snowstorms along Highway 69 en route to Sudbury, Hansen found more clemept weather en route to Blind River, but fyrther snowfall was threatening. And while countless other Canadians will be snuggled around cosy firesides during the festive season, Hansen will be toughing it out on the road. His only break will be on Christmas Day, wherever it happens to find him. A NUMBER OF pensioners and employees of Cominco are wondering if the sale by Canadian Pacific Ltd. of its Cominco shares will mean any change in the company’s various pension plans. “The security of pensions is not diminished by the sale,” John Gievanette, vice-president of human resources, says in the latest issue of Orbit, the Cominco in-house magazine. “Pension plans are held in a trust fund which is separate from Cominco’s assets, and this has not changed,” he said. COMINCO LTD. has discontinued its Christmas turkey program for employees, but pensioners will still receive a voucher to purchase a turkey this holiday season. Pensioners and surviving spouses will be mailed a voucher for $20 which may be used at major food supermarkets. THE FORMER constituency office of Kootenay West MP Beb Brisco wasn't vacant for long. The Province says the first person Boyd phoned about his thrilling win — his first ever on the World Cup circuit — was his girlfriend, Andrea Belezk. Belezyk is of course the sister of Boyd's downhill temmate Felix Belezyk of Castlegar. The 22-year-old Andrea, a Whistler waitress, said Boyd woke her up at 4 a.m. “He was very excited,” she said. “He said, ‘I won, I won, I won the race’. He was freaking out on the phone.” SHAW CABLE plans to move part of its Nelson operation-to Castlegar.
