Meredith Baxter Birney boasted big bellies on their TV shows. Actresses today combine work and mothering, but that wasn't always the case. J six years ago Lynn Redgra\ was fired because she wanted to breast-feed her week-old daughter Anal while shooting House Calls for CBS. Today, pregnancies are of- ten woven into scripts, and some studios provide day- care facilities and nurseries and give actresses time out to feed their babies. Thirty-four years ago, millions watched as Lucille Ball, through advance film- ing, gave birth to Little Ricky on I Love Lucy while in real life, she delivered her son, Desi Arnaz IV. But actress pregnancies became less public after that. Some either delayed or de- cided against having children because they feared they would be denied roles. WORK INTO STORY Today, however, “many producers have been more than willing to accommodate actresses who are expecting. Producers, in several in- stances, have been able to work it into the storyline,” said Carol Akiyama of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. ‘They must, or risk losing a star. 11 a.m. NO TAKE OUTI 365-8155 Kiwanis Club Lic. Susan Saint James, divor- ced mother on Kate and Allie, was placed in bubble baths and hospital beds to disguise her pregnancy. Pris- cilla Presley's pregnancy RHEA PERLMAN . hid behind o bar coincided with her carrying Boby Ewing’s child on Dallas. Constance McCashin was pregnant both off and on the screen in Knots Landing. “We are happy to have that in our lives. That's what life's about,” said Gary Gold- berg, creator and producer of NBC's Family Ties. “The work place should be an extension of our roles as mother and father. We love having babies and kids around. We think you don't have to give up anything to work.” When Baxter Birney was pregnant with twins, Gold- berg built a nursery. “Our whole schedule had to be adjusted to her feeding, but that's a happy adjust- ment,” he said. That concept was extended onto the lot of Paramount Studios, where a day-care facility was established for the cast and crew of movies and such TV shows as Family Ties, Cheers and McGyver. Fifty families have signed up. A dressing room was set up for Daly's daughter, Aly xandra, on the set of Cagney and Lacey. “One little goo-goo and they would stop (shooting). They had a method. BOD NEW YORK.(REUTER) — Six years ago, a fat 16-year-old from Milpitas, Calif., strangled his girlfriend, bragged about the killing to his friends and conducted a series of tours to the murder site, As many dozen high school students saw the body, which lay in a ravine for days. The students didn't particularly react tothe murder until one of them finally told authorities. Neal Jimenez, then a 20-year-old film student, wrote a script about the incident for a class project. That script has been used to ake River's Edge, which promises to become one of the most controversial movies of the year. David Denby, a New York Magazine critic, describes it as “the most disturbing movie I have seen in the nearly nine years I have held this job.” David Edelstein of the weekly Village Voice calls it “part pulp horror,” part teen melodrama, part black comedy . . . It's extraordinary, a stunnying new film.” Director Tim Hunter says the film's portrayal of a numbed and inarticulate generation is authentic. A former principal and some teachers from Milpitas High School came to see the movie at a film festival, he says. TELLS TRUTH Afterward, they told Hunter the movie realistically caught something of what that small segment of the teenage population was like. “The guidance counsellor talked about going into their homes and seeing half-gallon bottles of vodka right on the coffee table being passed around,” Hunter said. Hunter says that when he saw Jimenez’ script, he was “knocked out” by its depiction of a “blank generation.” “ “It was a complex and unpredictable piece in which the characters seemed to speak out from the page with their own voices,” he says. For the role of Layne, dope-smoking suburban kids, leader of a gang of Hunter chose Crispin r Murder makes movie Glover, fresh’ trom his success as Michael J, Fox's father in Back to the Future, a science-fiction comedy. With his enormous nose and.nervous mannerisms, Glover looks like a demented Pinnochio and dominates every scene, “{ didn't have to do too much prompting with Crispin,” Hunter says, “He was definitely something else.” Glover had no p the eft of Layne because “I knew specifically what kind of person he would be. “T’ve seen a lot of kids like that around Los Angeles.” The role of Feck, ajburnt-out psychotic from the 1960s, was harder to cast. “Nobody would. touch the part with a 10-foot pole,” Hunter says. “We knew that Dennis Hopper was on the verge of a major comeback and that he'd be in three or four pictures this year.” “So finally . . . we offered it to Dennis, who loved it and accepted it right away. It was such an obvious choice for the part.” Glover knew Hopper’s work from such films as Apocalpypse Now and the classic 1960s biker epic Easy Rider, which Hopper also directed. “I was certainly overwhelmed, working next to him,” Glover says."I felt quite green. He's very gracious, though — and he has the kindest eyes.” Glover, the son of character actor Bruce Glover, has acted since he was 14. In addition to Back to the Future, he played in two Sean Penn movies (At Close Range and Racing with the Moon). Hunter, a Harvard graduate and former film-profes- sor, is very happy about the initial reaction to River's Edge. “I've been surprised by the reviews,” he says. “I think people find themselves disturbed just to be laughing at a piece of material’ like this. “A film this dark, people aren't going to come out, go to their friends and say ‘Boy, I had a wonderful time!” ” i" nian Castle New Pam Evans returns to Slocan Valley for benefit engagement Singer-songwriter Pam Evans returns to the Slocan Valley for a benefit engage- ment Saturday, Aug. 22 at the Vallican Whole Commun- ity Centre.
