We do not presume to khow exactly what éaused the accident — to find this out is the job of the in- quest jury — but the following lines may help district drivers to enjoy greater safety on our snow-covered roads: “If you drivé.a’ 3000-Ib. car around a curve with a radius of 500 feet at 6Q miles per hour, the centrifugal (i.e. sideways pulling) force has grown to 1404 Ibs. . . Never enter a curve, too fast, because if you are compelled to jam on your brakes w while in the curve your motor-vehicle is harder to.control and liable to tur over, run off the road, or skid into oncoming traffic. The time to slow down for a curve is before you reach it, and if conditions permit you can, after you get into the curve at an easy speed, again open up your throttle géntly, as you will find that your motor-vehicle will take a curve better under power... . - “When your motor-vehicle starts to skid do not throw your clutch out and jam on the brakes, but instead turn your front wheels toward the direction of skid, leave your clutch engaged, and take your foot off the accelerator, allowing your motor-vehicle to slow down with the resistance of the engine. As your motor-vehicle straightens out also straighten out your front wheels to avoid coming into a skid’ in the op- . posite diréction-” Hello folks! Afternoon re- flections this week is being writ- ten on a double decker Grey- found bus. The scenery has been alternately beautiful “and bleak. We are almost a the bord- erline between Idaho and Mon- tana, My fellow passengers are of a as- sortment, Most of them are still in a state of lethargy from the jong overnight drive, There is one young lady in the crowd, though, who, as far as I can see, jaas never relaxed once. She is, I gather, fro:n the deep south and speaks with a husky feminine drawl. Her dark hair is done in an elaborate style and her skirts sake up the whole seat. While sharing the restroom with her briefly, 1- discovered quite by accident the reason for her non-relaxation — and I sup- nose I shouldn't tell tales, but, ‘many petticoats on one person at one time before — layers upon! layer of stiff net and lace; it’s no wonder that once she did get settled it was almost impossible for her to change her position. After witnessing this show of feminine frills, I felt conspic- uously plain in my strongest dark skirt. All the same, I'll wager my comfort against hers, anyway. There is also a slim, dark Negro girl traveling with us, who is a student nurse from Alabama Arrow Lakes Ferry Service ROESON TO EDGEWOOD Leave Robson Wharf 10:00 a.m. Mond and a iew aircrew boys sprawled all over the rear seats, moostly sleeping between coffee breaks, but coming abruptly to life whenever a frilly edge of our belle's , crinoli flut- tion or stumble blindly through a problem, but pray about it. Prayer is more than petitioning God on our behalf, or on behalf of others, It is finite linking with Infinite — humanity with Deity, resulting in answers for our good and His glory. The greatest thing a man can do is pray. Great. men of God have been men of prayer. Their giving and service follow- ed. During the Week of Prayer and afterwards let us not be guilty of talking about this great outlet of power or believe in it, but take time to pray. Yesus’ discourse with the eleven disciples in their journey fro mthe upper room to the olive groves emphasizes a vital point in praying. “Ye rave not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you that ye should go TOPICS ; p) and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain, That whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, He may give it to you.” John 15:16, God is willing, but our co- operation is essential: You can do more after you have prayed -but you can do more than pray until you have prayed. He had grown too heavy. eee, We had left him behind when we went on our holiday trip to ters by, their noses, A This should also interest the boys, especially the hunters in our district, and most especially the ones who didn’t get a deer this season: Leave your car at home, boys, and travel on a Greyhound bus — it’s a surefire way of obtaining your venison, that: is, if you're not squeamish about driving into a herd and if you don’t mind paying out $20 or so to get pulled out of the ditch. This, of course, was not the ariver’s idea of a hunting trip, and the deer were entirely at fault, but it sure beats climbing V , and we asked a kind friend to come and give the dog some dogfood every ay and some water. The dogfood we left in the shed, and the water in a bucket. For instance, I spent the last ten miles wondering how to get rid of a persistant young lout who insisted on buying me coffee, and I finally hit upon a fine daring scheme: Most any guy can be a big shot, when it s ,comes o a dime, but this time, iholy smokes, I’ve never seen sO; I fooled him (besides, I really was getting hungry and I felt it would be worth a couple of bucks to get rid of him). So in- stead of ordering coffee and pie, I examined the menu carefully, chose the most expensive din- ner, plus a shrimp cocktail, smiled sweetly at him, sat back, waited .— and sure enough, he suddenly decided that he wasn’t very hungry after all, and did I mind if he just ambled over and ate a sandwich with the boys. . ? That, I said, was just fine with me, and would he please just stay with the boys, while he was at it, Both of us were much happier. . So much for this time, and besides I'm getting sleepy again.
