Trai, Feb. 3.—(Special to the Recorp,)—O. A. Jurdan, formally of Johanneaburg, South Africa, is in town. “The discovery of the gold Selds of Johaunesburg was peculiar,” said Mr. Jordan. “Up to 1886 it was not known that there was any gold at all in that vicinity, In the fall of that year Col. Fererria, a Portugees officer, was trek- ing through that section and stopped over night at the present site of Johannesburg. There was flowing by theircamp and one of their Kafiir servants noticed something bright glistening in the sand. _Fererria’s at- tention was called to it, and discover- ed that the shining particles were gold. The lead from which the gold had come, was found nearby, and from that the excitement at Johannes- burg commenced. - The first boom occured the follow- ing summer, 1887. Closer trade relations with the United States was one of the planks in the platform on which the Liberals appealed to the country pre- vious to the recent general elections, The Liberals had not been in power six months before the confession is made ‘that they can do no more towards effecting a reciprocity treaty than their predecessors could. Mr Charlton tells of their failure in these words: “At Washington one cannot fail to be impressed by the conflict of selfiah interest that is everywhere noticeable. Against such influences it may be im- possible for Canadians to make any headway. We can but go to the mid- dle of the stream; and that it is our duty to do. If we fail, then we must turn elsewhere. We may have to bend our engeries towards increased trade with England and other coun- trics I think we shall do it anyhow. Our one supreme duty is in all things to strive to build up Canada.” ‘The Liberal party is now just about where the conservatives were 15 years ago in regard to Canada’s trade relations with the Mother Country.
