Johnson is a vote to put a safe man in the city council. A vote for Reddin is 4 vote for Corbin. A vote for W. H. Bellis an uncertain quantity, to say the least. There should not a man living on the disputed lands vote for either Reddin or Bell. The “‘equatters” now have their first opportunity to resent the insult of Mr. Reddin, who said they were cither ‘fools or knayes.” They can be depended upon to do it. Short phical s of Candidates for Municipal Offices. After learing his trade he struck out for himseli a penniless boy and went to the United States at the age of 18, when he worked frugal habits he saved some money, an¢ in 1862 returned to the place of his birth, and the following year opened a tin shop, and in a small way carried stoves and house furnishing hardware. He conducted this business for ten years, when he bought the Victoria Wheel Works, which he has built up, until to- day they are the largest and best equipped manufactury of the kind in Canada. There are now 50 men em- ployed. Five years ago he purchased a flouring mill at Galt, which he now ownes and is running. The scurrilous conduct of the Miner in its manner of opposing Mr. Scott is mak? ing that gentleman many friends. There is noargument in abuse or in calling him a carpet bagger. As hard a proposition as the Recorp had to determine in selecting six candi- dates for aldermen, was in leaving Mr. Wallace out, and the principal reason for doing so was that he says himself that he cares nothinz for the office and will do nothing to secure it. We feel that the defeat of undesirable candidates can be made more certain by helping men who are disposed to help them- selves. Vol. 1 No. 1 of the Salmon River Re- view is at hand. It isa four page five column paper, printed at Quartz Creek, on the line of the Nelson & Fort Shep- pard railroad about half way between ‘Waneta and Nelson. The editor and publisher is G.S Martin and the Re- view will be a truthful reflection of the section of the country in which he is lo- cated. It is a good country and we wish Brother Martin every success. The sub- scription price is $2 per year. THE RECORD'S COURS The stand the Recorp takes today in the municipal contest has been fore- shadowed by its utterances, for some time. Our policy toward Corbin and his claims, and in behalf of the squat- ters, render a different course toward Mr. Bell impossible. He was in- formed of this, and that 1 hal no right to expect further friendsiip irom the Recorp. Thatif there were no other reason than that he forced a poor man from his home in the dead of winter, we could not support him for office. There are many reasons why Reddin should not be elected alderman, It is not necessary to state them at this time. There will yet be plenty of opportunities. In supporting Mr. Scott in preference to Mr. Lalonde, we select the man in our judgment who is the most capable. We hold Mr. Lalonde in high esteem, as a citizen, honest, frank” and earnest, and should he be elected, the ecorD will be the first to congratulate him and the city. But he has been unfortunate in his friends, who have driven more than the Recorp away from him. y 56 vears old, he is active and vigorous, | &TS for the first mayor of Rossland, WILLIAM ALEXANDER CAMPBELL, William Alexander Campbell, a candidate for alderman, is 33 years old, Rossland to stand for alderman A : . 56 Fears old, he is active ant vipmuit|in the eeming civie elections, and in Wines Li UOrs and Ci ars obedience to their wishes begs to an-; = ——— nounce himself a candidate.
