ROSSLAMD PING RECORD. ernment stocks were the worst suf- ferers, indicating the political nature 8Y SBER CO. SMITH, of the disturbance to confidence. Having worn the Vanderbilt pew in St. John’s church threadbare, Wash- ington gossips are telling a new story about Mra.Cornelius Vanderbilt. They say she drove up to the new Corcoran art galleries the other day, ard sent the footman to the door to inquire whether it wasa “free day” er not. On learning that it was a “pay day.” Mrs. Vanderbilt drove off.—New York Press. Published every day (except Sunday) and Weekly. six Months One Month... What great good has the Sultan of Turkey ever done that the powers should be so anxious to bolster up his falling kingdom ? There is to be no water monopo- ly under the new water clauses bill. ESE It is wise legislation that courts the investment of capital, and still wiser legislation tbat at the same time protects the interests of the general public as the new water elauses bill so effectually does. —_— = Yhe rights of the public are of more concern than the privileges of a few of the public. It is reached from the north via the Canadian Pacific to A d, on the river; from there to Trail by steamer, and from Trail to Ross- land by the Columbia & Western railway. . . From the south, ~via Spokane, Washington, by the college and Hospital of Oral Surgery. Stussi block. A. PARE _— ARCHITECT —o— NEXT DOOR ee on Rossland, Rossland, B. C Falls & Northern and the Colum- bia & Red Mountain railways, Rossland has thirty five hotels, with bars, eating and lodging rooms, and a dozen restaurants; and all are well patronized. There are four weekly news- papers and two dailies. All other branches of business are well represented, The population is < at water powers of the provi of the greatest possible benefit with the least possible friction. His statement was that it was the in- tention of the government to intro- duce a bill that will” enable any company to take advantage of the water powers without waiting for the passage of a private bill by the house. This will do away with a good deal of lobbying and mach more vexatious delay. The “Hospital for the Insane Act” is a much more Christian sounding title than the “Lunacy Act.” Insanity is a form ef dis- ease and in many cases can be and is cured. A hospital for the in- sane is therefore a more appro- priate name than the usual title. The other provinces of the Domin- jon are recommended to follow the excellent example of British Co- iumbia and give to the legislation that affects the portion of their population that is afflicted with a» disease that attacks the reason the same same charitable title and one that 1s more in accord with the latest determinations of medical science. James F. Wardner has for some time been operating in mines at Ross- land and Trail, British Columbia. Not long since he had occasion to go east and asked the agent at the Kootenay town he was in for a pass. A tele- gram was sent to headquarters for in- struction and the answer that came was: “Don’t let Jim walk.” The wily agent obtained some subsistence from Mr Wardnor by changing the telegram to “ Don’t; let Jim walk,” before handing over the pass.—Min- ing and Scientific Press. The London Bankers’ Magazine finds that 325 securities on that market declined no less than £34, 141,000 between Januury 20 and Feb- ruary 22, from & quoted aggregate value of £3.224,812,000 on the former date, British tunds and foreign gov- vi irom 6,0! to 7,500. Board and ledging at the ho- tels, $2 to $3 per day. Meals 25 to 50 cents. Furnished rooms, $3.50 to $7 per week. It is useless to write and ask if any particular business would payhere. Business men are fall- ing over each other to establish nearly every kind of enterprise, and all seem to be doing well. Everybody must be his own judge and take his éwn chances. hile there is not work for all who inquire, most sober, indus- trious persons whe really wish to work have so far been able to obtain it. 2 We would not advise any man toland here ‘‘broke” without friends, although many who have done so are doing well. Tris camp is not being estab- lished on the basis of a pay roll at present. The populace is engaged, not only in working the mines and conducting the business of the town, but are buying,or bonding and develop- ing ining property; buying and selling real estate; building houses for rental purposes; pros- pecting and staking prospectors, Many are here simply looking on in wonderment. We believe it will go on and on until Rossland can boast a population of 50,000. After that it will probably settle down to a proposition of a pay roll, but not for four or five years. There are millions of money here from all sections of the globe; but the principal investors are from the United States, with Canada largely interested. The history of the camp reads like a fairy tale, and the fabulous riches are scarcely excelled by the imaginary “King Solomon’s Mines.” We will not attempt to discuss the mines in a single article, as we have been writing about them for nearly two years and have not been able to keep up with them. The ore shipments speak for themselves, The town has won an enviable reputation for law and order. It is supplied with waterworks and electric lights. The main street is graded and tea blocks are built up with two and three-story busi- ness houses. For further information come and see for yourself, or subscribe for the DaiLy or WEEKLY REcorD..
