A traditional Doukhobor
wedding ceremony took place
at‘‘the home of the bride's
parents, uniting .in marriage
Nina .Padmoroff, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Pete W. Pad-
moroff of Grand Forks, and
Walter Plotnikoff, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Alec W. Plotnikoff of
Castlegar.

The bride, who was given

in marriage by her parents,
chose a formal gown of white
organza, its empire silhouette
enhanced by a Victorian collar
of Alencon lace and seed pearls.
The sheer yoke and bishop
sleeves were accented with lace
appliques, as was the hemline
of. the long A-line skirt,
" "Her waist-length veil of
organza, with a scalloped lace
edge, misted softly from a
dainty cap of Alencon lace and
pearls, and she carried a
bouquet of red sweetheart
roges, white and silver maleen
and baby's breath. For jewelry,
she: Wore the groom's gift of
pearl earrings.

cousin of the bride from
Thrums, was maid of honor,
while bridesmaids were Misses
Sardy Plotnikoff and Lorraine
Padmoroff, the former being

Hotel in Castlegar was deco-
rated with pink and white
streamers, flowers, hearts and
wedding bells for the reception

ments of pink carnations, white
daisies, baby's breath and
candles,

T've just read a description
by a Canadian visitor to Japan,
of stores decorated with tinsel,
holly and ivy boughs, and tree
lights, and Christmas songs
coming over the loud-speaker in
the stores,

Santa,
Japan, too,

Christmas in Japan?
Where less than one per cent of
the population are Christians?

Well, not all of Christmas.
Just the Santas and the decora-
tions and the shopping. This
Canadian visitor looked in vain
for some stable scene, some
angel announcing Peace on
Earth, some other indication of
what Christmas is really all
about,

Some of us would say that
our Canadian Christmases
aren't particularly Christian,
either.

T've wondered what, prac-
tically, we can do about Christ-
mas. I've come up with a little
list of ideas. Maybe you can add
your own even better ideas, as
we start thinking about how
our Christmas, this year, can
have more of Christ in it.

‘<1, Send fewer cards this
year: Send just to people you
kndéw would really like to hear
from you. With fewer cards,
maybe’ we can put a personal
note with each one; or a
prpmise to write a longer letter
after Christmas, when, in the
few days of post-Christmas
quiet before things get back to

2, Cut down’ gift-giving.
“Children only” is now a custom
in many homes. By not buying
yet another tie for the uncle
who has everything, we can use
the money saved for some extra

mously to someone it would be
fun to surprise; some neighbor
who's been good to you, or
some older person whose
Christmas you can brighten
with a little thoughtfulness,

couple of hours a week when,
instead of doing all the many
things that must be done, you
can do something for Christmas

that you'll enjoy doing, It might:

be making that special. home-
made gift, or writing that letter
to a special friend, or making
snowmen with the children, or
just sitting and listening to
some Christmas carols,
Promise yourself you'll do
something to keep the Christ-
mas spirit alive in yourself,
instead of becoming increasing-
ly tired and cranky as Christ-

Surely that’s what gift-giving
should be like.

3. Give something besides
things. Like an invitation to
visit with your family during
the Christmas week. That could
mean more, by far, than a store-
bought present.

4.‘Do something in your
home to emphasize the true,
meaning of Christmas. Perhaps
you could have a once-a-week
Bible reading and discussion as
Christmas approaches. Perhaps
you could have some family
planning about what special
things your family might do to
make Christmas more as it
ought to be. The children might
surprise you with some tre-
mendous ideas.

5. Promise yourself you
won't get worn out this Christ-

Late Claims Recognized

Retroactive Homeowner
Grant payments now total
$196,677.00 to a total of 841
claimants, Hugh Curtis, Minis-
ter of Municipal Affairs and
Housing announced recently.

Curtis was referring to o
legislative amendment, ap-
proved carlier this year which
allows the provincial govern-
ment to. recognize legitimate
“late” cluims for either $280 or
$480 in the case of those
homeowners over 65 years of
age. Claims approved in Octo-
ber, forming part of the totals
above, were for 102 owners ina

total amount of $26,636.98,

“For any number of valid
reasons, homeowners may have
overlooked claiming last years’
Homeowner Grant to which
they are entitled," Curtis said.

Prior to the spring of 1978
there was no authority for the
Minister to pay grants retro-
actively.

“The more than eight hun-
dred homeowners who have
received their grant for 1977
properly tax purposes. are
proof that the change in regu-
lations was overdue and is most
welcome,” the minister said.

B.C. Grads to Receive
$10,000 in Scholarships

The Hon, Garde Gardom,

” provincial attorney-general, re-

cently announced that an
amount of $10,000 has been set
aside from the Provincial Lot-
tery Fund for a number of
scholarships available to high-
school students,
