Colderbonk Program helps infants By CHERYL CALDERBANK Staff Writer The Castlegar-based West Kootenay Infant Devel- opment Program is one of 24 community groups and organizations which receives funding from the Castlegar United Way. The development program has received funds from the United Way since 1982 and also receives money from the Trail and Nelson United Way organizations, says UNITED WAY FEATURE age limit of three years old. “Children from birth to three years are developing at a rapid pace wk thelr physical, social and intellectual acting director and infant Early Evans. : The program, which first started about 12 years ago, is a home-based program which provides services for children from birth to three years of age who are developmentally delayed or who run the risk of being developmentally delayed in one or more skill areas. Evans said infants include those with congenital problems, cerebral palsy, Down's Syndrome or those who are born prematurely. Infants in the program are helped to reach their “milestones” in five areas, Evans says. These include growth of motor skills in the large muscles, fine motor skills (i.e. stnall muscles), play skills, language skills, persona) {¢ressing apd feeding) and social skills. Evans says the program servea Kathie living within a 110-kilometre radius of Castlegar, including Trail, Rossland, Montrose, Fruitvale, Salmo, Nelson, Kaslo an the Slocan Valley up to New Denver. She says most infants in the program come from the Nelson and Trail areas. She adds that there are also infants in the Slocan Valley and the Ymir-Salmo area There are presently three infants from the Castlegar area in the program, but there were seven until recently In all, the program has just been feduced to 36 infants from 50 because of funding constraints. “The board gave a directive to go to 36 because there is only funding for 35,” Evans noted. She said children cut from the program were referred to other agencies, such as speech therapists, physiotherapy and, public health. Others were given a combined referral, while some have already reached the p on early experiences,” Evans says. “Early intervention is important to ensure that the child with a delay or at risk for a delay is provided with experiences that promote appropriate growth and devel opment,” she says. If infants work on developing their skills early, Evans says that when they get to be three years old and go into other services, the children already have the “foundation” and know “what it's like to work hard.” “(the child) has some ability to use as groundwork for future work (he) has to do,” she says. “If the program wasn't in existence, they would be at a disadvantage,” Evans adds. The infant. development, program is administered by a trained infatit development éongultant who works with the parents to develop a program of aétivities for their child The parents are responsible for carrying out the activities. The consultant makes regular home visits to check the child's progress, update the program and to answer parents’ questions. Appropriate toys and books are loaned to the family as necessary. The program is funded through the’ Kootenay Columbia Child Care Society, a non-profit organization which receives a yearly grant from the Ministry of Human Resources. Because of the increasing demands for the program's services, Evans points out that additional financial aid is necessary. She says the infants make progress within their program, but notes that in terms of reaching what their normal peers are doing, they are incapable of doing that. showing the elephant's feet. moving the ‘right ‘way. ‘according to an article in.the most recent issue of Orbit, Cominco’s in-house For those that don’t know, the right way is tworight feet forward, and then two left feet forward (see pictures). And so on. But pictures of the elephant which appeared on fertilizer bag in the early 1990s showed it walking like a horse — advancing on opposite feet. The story goes that a visitor from the Far ‘East originally spotted the goof-up. In any case, the drawing on the bag was corrécted, and Cominco hasn't used the trademark since the 1950s. But there is still one place where the Cominco elephant still walks like a horse. At the Warfield fertilizer plant there's a lily pond behind the office, with a cast-iron elephant statue in the middle. Water spouts from his trunk, but the elephant's feet are frozen in the incorrect, horsey gait. A COUPLE of new businesses have recently opened in Castlegar.
