Next meeting: Jan. 8, 10:00 a.m., Legion Hall ' 92 $5 OurPEOPLE _ Less than a week old, Bradley John-Demke already has a lot going for him. Dr. Jon Van Vliet delivered Bradley to parents Monica and David Demke at 9:31,p.m. on Jan. 3, making him the first baby born ‘in Castlegar in 1992. As a New Year’s baby, Bradley will receive a host of gifts from local merchants. Al- ready he’s been visited by Net- tie Stupnikoff of the Castlegar Hospital Auxiliary who had a silver spoon and t-shirt for him, and by his doctor who presented him with an infant car seat. : For the past nine years, the B.C. Medical Association has been giving car seats to par- ents of the first babies born in each of B.C.’s' 84’ hospitals where babies are delivered. “Infant and child restraints, when properly used, can re- duce fatalities by 90 per cent and disabling injuries by 65 to 70 per cent,” the association says in a news release. In a 1989 Transport Cana- da survey, about 18 per cent of B.C. children under five were not in a restraint system ap- propriate for their age, and on- ly 49 per cent of those in ap- propriate restraints used them properly. As a result, only 54 —_per_cent of children under five In 1990, six children in B.C. under the age of five were killed and 555 injured in mo- tor vehicle accidents. Despite a decrease from 1989 statistics, the association says there’s sill cause for concern, “We are still very concerned and encourage parents to make sure they know the prop- er manner in which to install their child’s car seat,” said Dr. Jim Rhodes, chairman of the BCMA Communications Com- mittee. Parents are also cautioned against buying children’s car ~ seats in the United States where models don’t always meet Canadian safety stan- dards. All new safety.seats sold in" Canada must be approved by Transport Canada. The Cana- dian Motor Vehicle safety sticker (CMVSS 213.1) on the back of the seat indicates the manufacturer’s compliance with federal safety standards, the release said. How do long-term preventive ap- proaches help to build strong families? What strategies are effective in developing coordinated, community-based initiatives? ‘ These issues will be addressed at a series of forums called “Communtiy Challenges: Strategies to Streéngthen Fami- lies” planned for the spring of 1992. Sponsoréd by the B.C. Council for the Family, participants will explore ways in which community members can work together to stength- en families. Forums will be held in the Kootenays, Okanagan, Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, Prince George- Cariboo, and in the northeast and northwest parts of the province. The forums will bring together community volunteers, service providers, professionals, parents, grandparents — anyone who has an interest in families. Participants will have the opportunity to share success stories, identify com- mon issues and conerns, and explore strategies for strength- ening families through community initiatives. “We must begin to consider preventive educational op- portunities and resources to be as essential to the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities as are intervention and treatment services,” said Carol Matusicky, executive director of the B.C. Council for the Family. « ae ee"
